Harry Jaffe: Ditch Sidwell and send your kid to the new Wilson

Anonymous
yes, i would. what says otherwise in my message? i went to a big State U for grad school where i taught undergrads, so i definitely understand what that experience is like. and DH is a professor at a brand name school. safe to say that we have a fair bit of experience with universities between us and yes, we would rather shell out for a boutique high school than for a boutique college.

I agree. At boutique high schools, they teach the use of the shift key. Makes all the difference in the world.

And WTF is a brand name college? Nike U?

"Memo to middle-class families struggling to afford private school at $30,000 a year: Take a YouTube tour of the new Wilson. Better yet, visit the campus. Talk to Cahall. Check with alumni. Consider switching Suzy or Jamal from Sidwell Friends School to Wilson. What you save in tuition will help you pay for the Ivy League school that might accept your kid."

Be careful to get Cahall on a good day -- he can be unpredictable -- and the scores have gone down on his watch.

LOL! Will love to see the day that a POTUS sends their kid(s) to a dc public. Not holding my breath.
Would they play the charte lottery or go in boundary? Last I checked the in bounds was Francis-Stevens.

These days it would be a security and paparzzi nightmare. And talk about test score pressure! God forbid a first child tested basic or worse.

I think it's worth much more to DC kids that Obamas (parents) visit public and host public and charters. Good for PR, fundraising, morale boosting without distractions of celebrity on a daily basis.

The latter is worth a lot, and I appreciate it. However, the children should be in a DC public or public charter school, period. Can you imagine the stream of children of the administration, area politicians following suit? Can you imagine how freakin' ridiculously good our public schools would be if all those people poured their kids in city-wide?

Oh. And then Obama wouldn't be a total hypocrite. Nice cherry on top.

LOVE THIS. Completely agree!

Cahall is a gym teacher. Wilson has a long way to go on setting academic standards. Maybe in 3-5 years? Hoping.

Didn't she flunk out of Brown? Sigh.

We're you suggesting that DCPS education was so bad that the President's daughter couldn't make it through college? Next time, please do 2 minutes of internet research to answer your question and then post that.

Carter was a anti-apartheid political activist at Brown. She completed her education at the Memphis College of Art and got a master's in art history from Tulane.

My 2 minutes search says she was asked to leave Brown for "academic reasons" - too much protesting and not enough studying. You left that out in reciting her vitae. Let me guess, you work for DCPS?

Huh? And your point is?

Sure. Right after he admits he's completely incompetent for his job.

Did your two minute search note the degrees from Miami and Tulane?

pretty silly. it's not the students that make the school. It's the quality of educational opportunities.

Having prominent politicians sending their kids to public is just unrealistic due to security concerns. I read somewhere that Amy Carter had to leave public school because regular bomb threats interrupted learning for the entire student body.

@15:14, Do tell what would happen, if that switch did materialize? I am active supporter of Woodson and I would love to see an exchange day. We used to do that in the day, where inter-city children exchanged a day-in-school-life with private and county school children. Do your part on your end with Sidwell and I'll do my part with Woodson. Let's make it happen.

I totally agree. DW went to a "Big 3" HS in DC, an "HYP" university, and a "Trinity" law school, and she's adamant that, while her undergrad and law school experiences were great, the vast bulk of her "real education" occurred in HS.
