VHSL Boys 2024 Season (Discussion and Scores)

Sorry not sorry if my son's team is that much better than your son's. Why should my son, who is a starter, constantly have to sit out after the first quarter just so the third string and JV kids can go in to play so the other team doesn't get their feelings hurt because they're losing by so much? And no, I'm not willing to drop a couple hundred grand to send my son to a private school so he can play in a more competitive high school field.

Marshall parent here, score was Yorktown 13 Marshall 3 until the last 10 seconds when classless #21 added an extra wound to Marshall. Personally, I think that scoring right before the end when you’re up by 10 is pretty unsportsmanlike and disrespectful. Talked to my son after the game and word on the street is #21 is “a total douche” (his words not mine) and acted in character. I think that players like this are contributing to the loss of decorum in this sport.

Based on the fact he is playing in the waning moments of a blowout, #21 on Yorktown likely doesnt see the field often, and that was probably his first career goal. That moment definitely meant a lot to him. If your son had such a problem with him, maybe he should’ve played better defense instead of focusing on belittling the players on the opposing team. Lacrosse is a ruthless sport.

So, it’s kind of a matter of class. Good coaches dial it back that point and look to move the ball, spread the playing time, and not ring up the score. They know their teams are superior, so what’s the point of winning 22-2 versus 12-2? Others keep in their starters and pad their stats.

Your comments give a good sense of which camp you are in. And many on this board can probably guess which one of 2 or 3 teams your kid plays for.

Guesses anyone?

Great post! The great coaches respect the game and their opponents and have that balance with all above. We were crushed by a superior Langley this year but still class act by coach, players, & parents.

So Langley beats Marshall 21-1 in the regular season, yet the concern is Yorktown scoring at 14th goal in a game that is not even a 12 goal game final?

Odd reasoning to be offended. Doesn't look like Yorktown put 20 goals on anyone this year and I'm not even a fan of them.

Yorktowns coach is one of the most classy individual’s in all of lacrosse. I’m willing to bet any 20 goal games the 2-3rd string guys are scoring. 48 minutes of playtime goes really fast with a running clock so your team really sucked if you lost by 10 or 20. The last second goal your kid gave up isn’t going to ruin his life.

Tell us your kid plays for Yorktown without saying your kid plays for Yorktown?

Is the Marshall Mom’s complaint merely that a goal was scored in the last few seconds, or something more?

Seems to be the late goal. Didn’t seem to mind losing by 20 to Langley (Langley didn’t take a shot for the last 10 minutes of the game). Can’t please everyone.

The Yorktown coach is one of the classier out there, I can’t remember a time they have ever scored more than 18 in a blow out

This is a ridiculous statement. What is the difference between 19 and 18. Or 19 and 20. It makes no difference and has no baring on if the coach/program is classy or not. Class is shown in the way the team plays, does the coach sub players out, do they try and score with 5 seconds in the game, do they run around taking cheap shots at people, do they talk trash and celebrate obnoxiously.

The score does not indicate class at all. Would you rather a team pass the ball around for 3 minutes and not shoot, or play all the backups, let them play with a running clock. I would argue that passing the ball around for 3 minutes is more a slap in the face to opposing team.

I can't think of a sport where, prior to the closing minute or so, the coach and team wouldn't want players who may not always get playing time to play hard and score. The main difference with lacrosse is that the scores are often lopsided because there's such a big talent gap. It's not the fault of Yorktown or Langley that Marshall is just not good at lacrosse (and really never has been). Dan Hale and Jerry Lin didn't mind beating down Yorktown and Langley at basketball when Marshall was in its prime a few years ago.

Coach Beer and other coaches of top teams wish all of their games were against Broadneck, Robinson, Langley, Madison, McLean etc…. Coaches hate the games where the outcome is known before the game starts and you have running clock by half. Neither team gets anything out of it when you have a team that can play into June. If they were up 11-0 at half as reported I would say Yorktown played a respectful 2nd half and most likely rested starters and emptied the bench if that late goal got them to 14 making the 2nd half score 3-3. A late goal by an over zealous bench player was probably not what coach wanted but that stuff happens.
