Hysterosonogram questions

Anonymous
If any of you ladies can help me, I would be so grateful.

I am scheduled to have a hysterosonogram Thursday morning. When I made the appointment, the person I spoke to kept insisting I could not be bleeding at all when I arrived. I tried to explain that the whole reason I am having the sonogram is that I have abnormal vaginal bleeding, so I cannot be sure whether I will be bleeding or not. She just kept repeating that I cannot be bleeding Thursday.

I am extraordinarily anxious to get this done, because I have PCOS, and I have been bleeding almost nonstop for more than the past month. I don't really ever get periods, so if they make me wait for the next "10 days after the first day of your cycle," I may need to wait forever to do this again. I only get older every day.

So my question is this: does anyone know WHY I cannot be bleeding at all to have this done? I can't find an explanation anywhere, and I don't want to call the radiologist office and tip them off that I might still be bleeding.

Also, I read on the internet that this procedure hurts. Is that true?

Not sure about the bleeding. Wouldn't think it should matter. I had it done twice. No big deal for me at all. The nurse said it usually hurts about as much as your normal cramps. I don't have cramps ever - it didn't feel like anything.

I would guess that the person scheduling didn't really know what she was talking about because your situation is different from the norm. I assume the doctor who ordered this test understood that you're bleeding non-stop. Different women have different experiences with hysterosonograms (HSGs) from it being a barely noticible, brief discomfort to very painful. Taking advil shortly beforehand is supposed to help.

Thank you so much for your insights. I just got the robo-call reminder, and it repeated that I cannot be bleeding before the sonogram. But yes, the doctor who ordered the sonogram knew I was bleeding and would probably still be bleeding, and one of the reasons the sonogram is done is to determine the cause of abnormal bleeding, so surely, surely, I cannot be the only person this has happened to. I am just so desperate for answers, I cannot bear the thought of not having this happen on Thursday...

14:19 here. It's really frustrating when medical office staff tell you things that freak you out when you're already freaked out by the medical problem. I hope your appointment goes really well and produces helpful, non-scary information.

Could you call your doctor or nurse and have them communicate with the radiologists' office? And explain that yours isn't the typical case? I have found both hysterosonograms and hysterosalpingograms to be painful. Take lots of painkillers. But hopefully they will make it really quick! Good luck to you in figuring out the issue and finding success soon.

PP don't scare her, anticipating pain can make it worse, I didn't find either test that bad, just a momentary discomfort.

Thank you, yes, I am always one who makes the anticipation worse than the pain itself! But I also want to know what I am getting into.

I did just leave a message at my doctor's office, asking whether bleeding precludes the sonogram or just needs to be disclosed. I really hope and pray that this becomes a non-issue, and I am just not bleeding at all on Thursday, but with the way my body has been lately, that is not likely.

I really thought I was getting close to "normal" when this strange bleeding started. That's the saddest thing to me right now, that I had finally started to hope, and just at that moment, bam, nope.

Sorry. I'm having a bad week

Good luck, anyone can have a bad week.

Not sure about the bleeding. It hurt for literally 1 second for me, and then it was fine. I worried about it hurting so much that the worry was much worse than the actual procedure.

I have been bleeding during both hsgs (fibroids the 1st time & pcos the 2nd) and no issues at all. Take Tylenol an hour before & it will just be about 10 seconds of cramps, not bad at all. My RE performed it both times & no issue with bleeding. The last one was very recent & he even pointed out the blood in the uterus & said there was a bit left. Don't worry at all!

Chiming in to say I also had zero problems with this test. I barely felt the saline. Just when it poured out of me as I sat up.

Oh, thank you! This makes me feel so much better.

This is with Fairfax Radiology...I tried to find out more information on their website, but to no avail, and my doctor's office never called back. But your words, PP, gave me great comfort, because I'm still bleeding tonight, so I probably will be Thursday. I'll be sure to take some pain medication beforehand. Again, thank you all!

New poster. I was shocked by the intense, searing pain that I experienced. The technician at Foxhall Radiology was holding my hand and looked like she was feeling my pain. I actually got a hug when it was over. Meanwhile my doctor seemed oblivious.

So, I think that ever woman going for this procedure should be aware of the possibility of pain. My best friend had minor pain, but mine was off the charts, and it's not unusual.

Good luck with the HSG - I was fully prepared for excrutiating pain and asked the Dr to tell me before he actually injected the dye - as I sat there waiting on the table with the catheter in, he suddenly said "ok, you can go" - I never even felt it. . .but I will say - my friends who did feel it - all agreed, it's a VERY quick experience - it's not an excrutiating half hour lingering pain. I just kept reminding myself that I was doing this to sign myself up for childbirth which would be about 1000x worse
