Brandon said he was actively struggling with addiction the last 5 years of the marriage. To his credit he didn’t deny he had a problem and said he’d sought help. It takes two to tango so Jen’s raging codependency fed into the breakdown.
Brandon seems to have happily moved on with his life so not much to see there. Jen on the other hand is flailing around trying to find herself. |

Hi Jen |
So, 'Simple and Free" is just warmed-over "7"?
I borrowed "7" from my daughter a few years ago and thought that while somewhat gimmicky, it had some good points. But I remember thinking then what an exhausting person she must be in large doses.( Disclaimer: I am a massive introvert, so ymmv) Now I wonder, based on former ANC posters here, if any of the heart- warming episodes in 7 were true at all. She is a sad person in many ways. |
Anyone know what the updates are in Simple and free from the original 7? She said she changed parts and added new info. |
Tell me you are Jen Hatmaker without telling me you are Jen Hatmaker. Who the f*ck cares? |
This. 💯% |
Curious why of the 12 books she’s written she chose the one book most opposite of how she’s living her life now to repackage and put back out there. |
Isn’t the answer obvious?!?! $$$ |
Yes but Glennon outed her husband’s struggles in her book and shot the stratosphere, way more money. Perhaps Jen missed an opportunity. I think her upbringing had as much or more to do with it. Fake it till you make it and keep the secrets of the family from everyone. |
She reflected on some of the outdated thoughts and language regarding things such as food/diet, her privilege, how she referred to people (such as serving "the least of [God's] people.") - things of that nature, etc. She did a decent job of updating it in that regard, considering I think she wrote the original in maybe 2008? She basically made additions/changes to reflect how her beliefs have changed over time. Otherwise, it's all the same content, including keeping all the references to Brandon (even though I think Simple and Free came out in 2021?) And no, this isn't Jen. Haha. I have posted on here many times skeptical of her behavior and content. I just wanted to share an answer to your question, as I have the books/workbooks (both for 7 and for Simple and Free). I was still somewhat of a fan when she released Simple and Free. |
Correct me if I’m wrong but Glennon isn’t shilling anything except maybe her podcast. She is 100x more authentic than Jen. |
Yeah, listening to her podcast with Glennon (stating it was similar to Glennon's situation, laughing about men needing a "new" storyline, saying she was "half right" about 6 months before the divorce about her concerns that she contacted Glennon about) - it has to involve porn addition or cheating, and my guess is that it also included substance abuse - whether that be drugs/alcohol or both. Glennon's husband was a porn addict and a serial cheater, but has never been "outed" by Glennon or stated himself that he was addicted to any substances. So I really don't think it was "just" substance abuse/addiction. I think there was also probably a financial element to Brandon and Jen's situation too - and maybe he was in just such a bad place after his friend's death that several issues/addictions spiraled out of control over the past few years of their marriage. It does "appear" that Brandon has found happiness, but I don't trust SM to tell us the whole truth about anyone. He certainly presents as less manic and desparate for attention, but I'm wary of giving men the benefit of the doubt, just by appearing more "calm" and happy on SM. As for Jen and any missed opportunity - I mean Glennon's former husband is kind of a unicorn for allowing her to tell-all about everything and make money off of his struggles. I am guessing Brandon may not be so agreeable to that, so there may be some legal reasons why Jen cannot fully disclose everything. If it has anything to do with financial stuff with their church or non-profit, she FOR SURE would want to keep that under wraps, esp. Legacy Collective. |
There’s ads on Glennon’s podcasts, but I haven’t noticed shrilling on her social media. She has made way more bank from her books. The thing that helps her stand out from Jen is how she has a basic understanding of addictions, relapse and recovery. She even recently outed her own bulemia relapse. I keep wondering if she’ll lovingly confront Jen cause there’s no way she can’t see the dysfunction. Then again as a recovering codependent she may just let her have her journey. Agree Glennon feels way more authentic. She also didn’t paint herself as a Bible scholar. She seemed more of a “I really like this Jesus but not so sure about these Christians” kind of gal. Whereas Jen set herself up as a spokesperson on all things Christian woman. |
Glennon likely is in a different stratosphere financially than Jen, and doesn't need to hawk/shill. She's married to Abby Wambach, they have a $6+ million home in LA, part ownership in the NWSL team Angel City, etc. There are several things that bother me about Glennon, too. I am not sure how much authenticity we really get from any of these people. Glennon, who SHOULD have a good knowledge base around addiction/recovery, just "happened" to meet Abby at book conference and fall in love, all within a few months of Abby's DUI in 2016. If Glennon really followed the rules of recovery, she would have never pursued Abby in the early stages of her recovery. Just sayin'. I think Glennon is fame-hungry. She certainly didn't fall in love with just any woman. And the way she (and her sister) treat Abby on their podcast sometimes is atrocious (IMHO). |
