"...I think you can make the case that the admissions process for schools like Cornell on up to MIT is now so competitive and unpredictable that it probably favors kids who are dishonest or crazy, or supported by parents who are dishonest or crazy." Wake up call! The admission process is very competitive and unpredictable for dozens of schools that are below Cornell including Tufts (not just the Ivy League). Using your logic Tufts admissions process also favors kids and parents who are dishonest or crazy. |
The post above made no indication of Tufts in regard to the schools referenced, other than to say a comparison is irrelevant as they are different institutions, with which I agree. This need to rank and compare for the purpose of building up your favored school over another - on an ANONYMOUS board - is pretty exhausting. |
Ludicrous...as an impossibility? Gotcha. |

Okay, this thread has strayed far from its original purpose. As has been suggested by others, Tufts is a desirable school in the eyes of college applicants. The website below used data on cross-admits for the period 2012-2019 to come up with a "desirability" ranking. You can read about their method at the link below
https://academicinfluence.com/resources/guidance/what-is-desirability In very simple terms, if most students who were admitted to both Univ. A and Univ. B, chose to attend B, then B is deemed more "desirable" than A. The desirability ranking itself is at https://academicinfluence.com/custom-college-rankings?sort=desirability&community=no&specialFocus=no Community colleges and special focus institutions (e.g., maritime academies) were filtered out. Enjoy! |
I'm seeing that behavior mostly from Tufts boosters who keep trying to overrate the school and in the process denigrate others. |
| Only if overrate means compare to some others’ sacred cow. Most of the schools discussed thus far are virtually the same. |
Someone literally said Tufts would be the #1 or #2 school anywhere else outside of Boston... LOL but okay. |
25 Largest MSAs New York (Columbia, NYU) 2/3 LA (UCLA, USC, Pomona, CalTech) 3/4 Chicago (NW, UC) 3 Dallas 1 Houston (Rice) 2 DC (Gtown) 2 Miami 1 Philly (Penn, Swat) 3 Atlanta (Tech, Emory) 1-3 Phoenix 1 Boston 4 Bay 3 Riverside 1 Detroit 1/2 Seattle 1 MSP 1 SD (UCSD) 1/2 Tampa 1 Denver 1 StL 2 Baltimore 2 Charlotte 1 Orlando 1 San Antonio 1 Portland 1 Pretty damn close. |
This is... embarrassing. For you, and for Tufts. |
. Mmmm no. Not really. No connection to Tufts. Simply dismissing the school because of what ever issues you have with the institution is kind of embarrassing. Like discussing politics with a Trump supporter. |
+1 While I have some disagreement with how you’ve ranked Tufts in a few of the cities (in some I think it ranks lower, in others higher), I think the general spirit of the MSA posting is correct. Of equal importance, and as referenced in several posts above, Tufts is the kind of school some applicants choose over higher ranked schools for specific, even quirky reasons (size, location, disciplines, etc). It’s not to say it’s ranked higher than it is - just that it’s appealing to applicants in ways that are not common to other schools. So for the purpose of the OP, yes “there is a there there,” and it’s absolutely worth your niece considering. As for the need to bad mouth the school as demonstrated by several posts in this thread, that too is not unexpected. Some folks just want to feel superior no matter the circumstances. As referenced above, trying to argue with that perspective by using reason and facts is as futile as trying to convince a Trump supporter they are harming themselves and the greater nation with their misguided affinity. |

It's really splitting hairs with many of these schools academically overall. Thus it comes down to specific programs, culture, location, etc.
No one is going to look at, say, Tufts vs. Emory and say, "Obviously we should snap up the Emory grad." |
Bet you lose those arguments as well. |
Ha! PP, you brought me a chuckle, thanks. Unfortunately, there is no winning an argument with someone who chooses a belief system with no basis in reality. This applies whether the topic is following the Trump agenda, or the odd path taken in this thread. |
| Stop trying to make Tufts appear to be a better school than it is. It’s odd and makes Tufts people just seem deeply insecure. |
