Why do so many parents want DL forever?

The local school system should not have to continue to pour resources into online learning after this school year because some parents want to keep their kids home. There are virtual schools and many states have their own virtual public school. The local district should not have to spend money to keep providing this.

This is what it has always been about. Wealthier white families who are afraid that the minority kids at home are siphoning resources from their own kids.
There are kids in my class who have lost multiple family members to COVID. They have parents who don’t speak English, who work in fast food and public transit and in housekeeping. Some of these kids have parents who are illiterate even in their own language. You have absolutely no right to dictate how funds are allocated to students like this. Do you understand how devastating it will be to these families if their child brings home COVID to grandma and an infant? They don’t have insurance. Some live in shelters or in crowded low income housing. They can’t isolate a sick family member in a cozy bedroom like you can.

I’m embarrassed for the people who pretended to care about these children months ago. They pretended to advocate for these families until they finally realized that they don’t, in fact, want to send their kids back to school mid pandemic. They were always a prop, and now they’re back to being an obstacle to Charlotte’s flute lessons. Vile.

What makes you think I am wealthy and white?

In my district, 50 percent of black and 60 percent of Latinx families chose in person. If you read my post, you’d see that I’m talking about next year, when every adult will have had the opportunity to be vaccinated. At that point, DL needs to go away.

The most vocal proponents of DL forever on my local moms group on fb are white women with anxiety disorders.

It doesn't need to go away. You want it to go away. MCPS has said they are working on keeping DL for those who want it. Why are you so threatened by families liking DL?

Because currently teachers are being tasked with teaching both remote and in person students, and it is impossible to do effectively. There are elementary schools in my district where the 2/3 of the kids in person are forced to sit with their headphones on staring at chromebooks all day so that the teacher can simultaneously teach the 1/3 of kids at home, and to keep it "fair" for everyone. Schools are all closed on Wednesdays as well, because "remote students need a break from the screens." My kids, and the majority of kids OF ALL COLORS in my district, need 5 days a week of real in person instruction next year, and it won't happen if the district has to keep providing online instruction. They don't have the funds to hire an entirely new set of staff just to teach online students. And, once again, state virtual academy already exists for this purpose.

We don't want DL forever but we do want it for now and as an option for next year. There doesn't seem to be any good reason for our family to transition to hybrid. There are way more pros than cons for DL: our kids are learning more because their teachers don't have to deal with knuckleheads and behavior management which means they can focus on content, our kids have more free time, our kids have more flexibility in their learning environment, it works better for our family, and it doesn't unnecessarily increase our family's exposure to the virus. We don't see any down sides to staying DL right now. When at least 90% of the population is vaccinated, including adults and kids, then we'll be fine with a RTS but it isn't necessary or wise at this time.

What would you plan to do if we don't ever get to 90% vaccination rates? It seems unlikely that only 10 percent is unable/unwilling to get it.

As long as you are fine with an asynchronous program, a district-wide program, or being put into something like K-12, fine by me.

Its the parents who insist on DL being run through their child's school that are unreasonable, selfish a-holes.

Ah, there you are. The pot calling the kettle black.

Jesus. Not even trying to hide the outright discrimination. Knuckleheads? My God.

People like this should be not allowed near policy decisions.

At some point, everyone needs to understand that DL and in person will compete for the same tax dollar, good teacher, admin costs etc. Nothing is free.

We are at rapidly approaching vaccines open to all 16 plus. It is time to plan for full reopen.

That makes it safer for yours. If people were behaving differently in terms of travel, socializing and all that then maybe it would be safer. But people choose to continue the spread so the rest of us get punished by their choices. Stop caring about others wanting DL and be responsible so we can all safely return.

Everyone is eligible now for the vaccine. School is already safe, but now you DL crazies have no excuse to continue your hibernation away from society.

OMG. It is sad. You even wake up angry and insane. A mind is a terrible thing to waste.

Everyone is NOT eligible for the vaccine. Children are NOT eligible for the vaccine. Not all adults everywhere are eligible for the vaccine. You really need to work on your ignorance and your anger. Therapy will help with the anger. I don't know what to tell you about your ignorance because ignorance is a choice that you've made to refuse to be educated.

I can completely understand why your kids want to go to school. If I were desperate to get away from you, I would want to go to school, too.

In the meantime, the rest of us are stable and happy to let the pandemic subside before returning willy-nilly to the old ways because we're scared. We're not afraid to show our resilience and then act accordingly. We're making it work because we're flexible and adaptable. When the health situation improves then our kids will return to school. Until then we will keep on doing what we've been doing because our kids are happy and thriving, and that's what is important to us.

There is no reason to give a rational response to these posts. They have magical thinking. We will not ever get to a 90% vaccination rate for covid.

I am not angry lol. My kids are both in private school enjoying in-person learning since September. And all people over 16 are eligible for vaccine in MD. So I say we are good to go MCPS!! Full time 5 days a week will be here by Sept.

Does your state have a virtual school? Why don't you enroll in it? Why didn't you enroll in it before the pandemic? Why didn't you homeschool before the pandemic, if your kids have a superior education away from the distractions of in-person learning?

Talk about lack of self-awareness. Read what you wrote: my kids are happy so that's all that matters. God it.

This. Please enroll in the pre-existing state virtual school. No need to waste the resources of your local school district when well run virtual schools designed for the sole purpose of virtual instruction already exist.

NP. I think many DCUM posters who claim their children are thriving in DL are liars, don't know enough educationally to properly assess progress, or are narcissists who can't differentiate their children's feelings from their own. I suspect PP above manages to hit that trifecta.
