So sick of labels and labeling!
|
Black people throw the label around as do white people. You know who doesn’t use it as much? The so called brown people. By the way are Latinos (Latinx sorry) brown? What about South Asians? Interestingly when I was in college some South Asians would jokingly call themselves brown but now I’m hearing they are “white adjacent” and there are too many of them in schools like TJ (we don’t know how many Arabs are in TJ cuz Arabs are told to check white lol). What about East Asians? Or are they just Asians? Interestingly half the Arab world is in Asia but Arabs aren’t classified as Asian. Also funny story -My extremely fair skinned Egyptian friend checked African-American as his racial category because get this - he’s originally from Egypt and Egypt is in Africa. |
Yep! And sometimes the labels don’t fit/make sense. |
This is why identity politics is exhausting and damaging |
Yes, too woke. Aren’t parents notified ahead of sex Ed topics? Can you opt out for religious reasons or mental health or otherwise? My HFA kid takes things quite literally... |
This sounds ridiculous. |

I like that this thread has tackled all of the important topics, like Chik Fil A, "Brown" identity and now trans indoctrination. It is honestly sort of funny.
The school does not hid what it is. Don't like it then don't go there. However, it seems that there are several multiples of more people that want to attend than they have space for. So a lot of people like what they are cooking over there. There are tons of different schools to satisfy everyone's political orientation. Go find one that fits yours. |
Why are you mocking my post on brown identity? If we are going to classify people by race we might as well know what we are talking about. People throw around the word brown in their woke conversations but have no idea what they are talking about. Imposing the “brown” identity on people who don’t identify by race is a classic form of western imperialism. |

I’d wrap it up differently. I think the school is mindblind to how much it is alienating current families and students with how constant and extreme they have gotten the last few years.
They don’t know- nor ever solicit anonymous or honest feedback- how many people are holding their noses at it all hoping the real academics come though and their kids don’t get screwed up. We picked it due to location and academic reputation. Now we question the latter and have concerns on mission obsession. |
Agree. I would only go there if 100% happy with its political ideology and application in the classroom, day in and day out. It is too pervasive and overcomes all other elements of the school. |
I basically think it is the same as Catholic schools. Many attend for education quality but you also have to be comfortable with the religiosity, politics and conservativeness or else you will similarly grow discontent. |
| Religious history class versus constantly talking about one view and definition of race, gender, politics, American history, immigration, literature? |
^^ This. |

TO ANSWER THE OP: IF YOU MADE IT TO THE END OF READING THIS EXASPERATING THREAD YOUR KID (AND FAMILY) WILL BE FINE AT GDS...IF NOT... Signed, Parent of more than one child at the school.
But seriously. GDS is woke. Like really woke. Your kids will correct you if you use non-pc or dated language. We find the place exasperating at times. But our kids LOVE it and have great friends, good relationships with teachers and are learning a lot. So we deal and keep them there. But sometimes it is truly challenging. We discuss the importance of different points of view and respectful dialogue. We tell ourselves over and over that our kids are happy- even in these difficult times so that is a big plus. |
and yet you still pay the money to send your kid there . . . how weak-minded are you? |
