Where do we go from here? Just start dishing out college acceptances, jobs and homes by skin color and hope for the best. Sounds good to me. What a country.

I’m getting really tired of this “brown and black” language that is being thrown around. Who is brown? I am Arab. Am I brown? What about my cousin with fair skin, blond hair and green eyes? Is she white? Or is she brown? What about my neighbor who’s skin was really dark? Is he black or brown? People keep throwing out the word brown but no one seems to know what it means.

And notice it's all white people throwing these labels around.

LOL no it isn't. I'm a black woman and black people regularly use it as well.

That Arab commenter is being willfully obtuse. If theres anyone that should know what it means, it's an ARAB. LMAO

Black people throw the label around as do white people. You know who doesn’t use it as much? The so called brown people. By the way are Latinos (Latinx sorry) brown? What about South Asians? Interestingly when I was in college some South Asians would jokingly call themselves brown but now I’m hearing they are “white adjacent” and there are too many of them in schools like TJ (we don’t know how many Arabs are in TJ cuz Arabs are told to check white lol). What about East Asians? Or are they just Asians? Interestingly half the Arab world is in Asia but Arabs aren’t classified as Asian. Also funny story -My extremely fair skinned Egyptian friend checked African-American as his racial category because get this - he’s originally from Egypt and Egypt is in Africa.

Yep! And sometimes the labels don’t fit/make sense.

This is why identity politics is exhausting and damaging

GDS is so progressive you are singled out and called names if you dare frequent Chik-Fil-A. Someone commented she GDS students are over it and walk around with Chik-Fil-A cups, to which a GDS parent said that the students that do this are little dicks.

Big lie and too bad you are falling for it. GDS kids go to chick fil a and nobody gets shamed. I can’t believe I even have to say this. Great trolling.

Not the year the chik fila CEO was mob attacked, that was well covered in class and with boycott banners in the school classes and foyer.

My DCs signed petitions against Chick fil A that year. They and their friends were attending Deal. DCs are now at GDS and before COVID they were happily hanging out at Chick fil A with their GDS, SWW and Wilson friends. Nobody gets cancelled over eating there. Stop trolling.

Right. Nothing comes between a teen boy and his Chick Fil A - even if he does sign a middle school "petition" to impress the girls.

Don’t forget the students are told to “explore and question their gender” and thus all tell the school they are non-binary to STFU on it already.

You're kidding.

Great trolling!

That is not a joke. It’s absolutely true.

I remember when our youngest was doing the GDS 2nd grade Identity Unit all year.
Out of the blue just sitting around he’d be bothered and say He’s supposed to explore his gender. And that there were three genders.
The thing his 8 yo self most contorted was something about how one could be “one thing on the inside but another on the outside.” He thought that meant they could have a baby and the parts were female inside and male outside. All by willing it so!

Net/net: It’s one thing to teach children to be inclusive towards those who have gender dysphoria. It’s quite another to tell young children to join in, explore their gender and think about it all the time. They should be focusing on geography, math, reading, writing, sports and the Golden Rule.

Yes, too woke.

Aren’t parents notified ahead of sex Ed topics? Can you opt out for religious reasons or mental health or otherwise? My HFA kid takes things quite literally...

This sounds ridiculous.

I like that this thread has tackled all of the important topics, like Chik Fil A, "Brown" identity and now trans indoctrination. It is honestly sort of funny.

The school does not hid what it is. Don't like it then don't go there. However, it seems that there are several multiples of more people that want to attend than they have space for. So a lot of people like what they are cooking over there.

There are tons of different schools to satisfy everyone's political orientation. Go find one that fits yours.

Why are you mocking my post on brown identity? If we are going to classify people by race we might as well know what we are talking about. People throw around the word brown in their woke conversations but have no idea what they are talking about. Imposing the “brown” identity on people who don’t identify by race is a classic form of western imperialism.

I’d wrap it up differently. I think the school is mindblind to how much it is alienating current families and students with how constant and extreme they have gotten the last few years.

They don’t know- nor ever solicit anonymous or honest feedback- how many people are holding their noses at it all hoping the real academics come though and their kids don’t get screwed up.

We picked it due to location and academic reputation. Now we question the latter and have concerns on mission obsession.

Agree. I would only go there if 100% happy with its political ideology and application in the classroom, day in and day out. It is too pervasive and overcomes all other elements of the school.

I basically think it is the same as Catholic schools. Many attend for education quality but you also have to be comfortable with the religiosity, politics and conservativeness or else you will similarly grow discontent.

Religious history class versus constantly talking about one view and definition of race, gender, politics, American history, immigration, literature?

TO ANSWER THE OP:

IF YOU MADE IT TO THE END OF READING THIS EXASPERATING THREAD YOUR KID (AND FAMILY) WILL BE FINE AT GDS...IF NOT...
Signed,
Parent of more than one child at the school.

But seriously. GDS is woke. Like really woke. Your kids will correct you if you use non-pc or dated language. We find the place exasperating at times. But our kids LOVE it and have great friends, good relationships with teachers and are learning a lot.
So we deal and keep them there. But sometimes it is truly challenging. We discuss the importance of different points of view and respectful dialogue. We tell ourselves over and over that our kids are happy- even in these difficult times so that is a big plus.
