2021 VA Governors race

Anonymous
Has any candidate, of either party, expressed support for dumping the proposed changes to Virginia math curriculum? Has any candidate been asked about this?

Proposals to take effect, already being implemented, will eliminate tracking and place all kids at grade level math. No moving ahead to more advanced classes, no honors classes, no remedial classes. The emphasis will be on group work with the more advanced kids helping the weaker ones.

Algebra will not be an option for middle school, and calculus will be an option that will generally not be doable with algebra pushed to 9th grade(technically it and geometry will be split up into pieces to be taught over multiple years including in middle school).

Caroll Foy's campaign consists of little more of appealing to those who would vote for a black woman merely because of her race. She has little chance of getting through a primary, with McClellan and Fairfax also in the field, much less a general election.

You guys don't get it. Both parties put out extra primary candidates to split up the vote and help the establishment pick. For Republicans they arrange for extra conservative candidates to be in the race to allow their corporate guy to win claiming to be a conservative.
For Dems, they put out extra black candidates and other left-wing people. Dennis Kucinich to take support away from Howard Dean, Carol Moseley-Braun to take away support from Al Sharpton(with a moderator deliberately asking questions to make him look dumb), Mitt Romney had several conservatives in 2012 splitting the field, Cory Booker and Kamala Harris, etc. Then when Bernie was ready to win, they arranged for all the candidates to drop out and endorse Biden, including with phone calls from Barack Obama, except for Elizabeth Warren who would drain support from Bernie. They broke their rules to let Bloomberg into the debate when it looked like Biden wouldn't win.

These primary campaigns are being propped up by McAuliffe to divide his opposition.

+100

That’s why Republicans aren’t doing a primary. They want a corporate bootlicker who couldn’t cut it in a primary and Snyder is their guy.

My understanding is generally in conventions you get the more conservative candidate winning, beating out the establishment choice. This is how Obama beat Hillary dominating the caucuses while losing almost every big primary.

I feel bad did Virginia. McAulliffe is laughably corrupt.

Either of you have any evidence for that?

PP here. It’s an opinion. However, he was under FBI investigation while in office and his financial ties to the toll road firms are suspect, as well as those contracts. He’s a Clintonite and therefore it’s no surprise that he has suspect personal finances, personal and business relations intermingled with his public decisions.

VA needs to move on before it loses its reputation for good governance. The fact that he’s running again demonstrates that he lacks an appreciation for these traditions.

It’s sad that Virginians have to choose between him and Justin Fairfax.

Word of that investigation leaked five years ago and nothing ever came of it, so I doubt if they found anything wrong. I’d love to see a link about the toll roads. And there are other choices besides him and Justin Fairfax.

Snyder is a Trumper. Amanda Chase is too and crazy but somehow leading!!? Good God.

I'm an Independent and I'm trying to decide which primary I'm voting in. Part of me wants a republican gov so we will have a republican Sec. of Education. Really dislike the new equity math initiative that eliminates all advanced math until 11th grade. Thinking Kirk Cox is the least crazy of the Repubs running?

No primary this year; the VA Republicans are hosting a convention and having delegates choose the nominee. https://ballotpedia.org/Virginia_gubernatorial_election,_2021_(May_8_Republican_convention)

I think Snyder is a wolf in sheep’s clothing on the Trumper thing and trying to pander to get their votes. He advised Romney’s 2012 campaign, after all.

Um, about that convention...

Northam has endorsed Hala Ayala for Lt. Governor. She isn't very impressive, but she is a woman, so I guess he think it would add diversity to the ticket since he's endorsed McAuliffe.

Of course some of the other Lt. Governor candidates like Sean Perryman are having complete melt-downs over this, but Perryman loudly called for Northam to resign after the VMI yearbook picture came out so it's not like he was ever going to get a Northam endorsement.

Personally, still like Jennifer McClellan and Sam Rasoul but McAuliffe can buy the Governor's election and Northam's endorsement of Ayala is fairly significant given all the undecideds. At this point it's realistically down to Rasoul and Ayala for Lt. Governor; the rest can go home.

IIRC McAuliffe himself called for Northam to resign and also got a Northam endorsement. 🙃

A potato chip could be running on the Democratic ticket and would win NOVA's vote.

The Macker will win by nine points over Pete Snyder or Kirk Cox.
