Are you sure? Presumably there were a lot of large donations to this fund, given who is attached to Sidwell. And presumably people were giving with the expectation that there would be a trial and hence a lot more attorneys' fees. Since he pled guilty, the fees couldn't have been that high, or at least not nearly as high as anticipated. Just curious what happens to the money if a defense fund is over-funded?

I wouldn't presume anything. While there was a general innocent until proven guilty attitude, there were not a lot of people voicing support for him. I would be surprised if he had enough money to pay off his lawyers in full.

Well, my DS is at Landon and had the teacher mentioned in the paper. He was shocked that his teacher was accused of saying the things he did on the field. DS said that he really liked this teacher's class. DS felt that he learned a lot from this teacher and had a hard time believing the teacher did or said the things he is accused of. DS did not play the sport that his teacher coached. Just shows you that not even the kids are always aware of what's going on.

I heard that he had a drawer full of candy in his desk that he only told certain kids about. He kept it so these special kids would come back and visit him. I was told that other teachers felt uncomfortable about this but did nothing to stop it and looked the other way. Now when they look back they feel sick because they see that they may have ignored clear warning signs.

The situation with the Sidwell teacher is horrific but I think the reason there is a separate section about Landon is that there have been more than one issue over the years and there are very serious questions being raised (including by Landon parents) about the culture of the place. Its comparing apples and oranges.

Whatever happened to this teacher. How long had he been teaching at Sidwell before he was caught? This is disgusting.

Also, if you go to the new section (which I just did for the first time), there are at a guess two dozen separate threads on the issue. It would swamp the private school forum. Whereas this Sidwell issue, like the Beauvoir issue before it, has been mainly confined to a single (if long) thread.

Wow. There are some horrifyingly naive and judgmental individuals posting on this forum.

There's a troll posting on various issues today, especially Sidwell. Just ignore him/her/it.

Deeply, deeply disturbing. Maybe Sidwell's culture needs to be examined if things like this are tolerated amongst the teachers..

This is totally not true. I've had several conversations with the principal and there were no signs. Stop spreading nasty rumors. A candy drawer?? Really?? He taught eight graders, not three year olds.

Ummm. I hate to burst your bubble, but the principle is not going to tell you about any signs, when they have not gone public with anything other than how they addressed the issue. I don't know if the rumor is true or not, but the fact the teacher was having students over to his home would definitely be considered a "red flag" in this day in age. I'm not criticizing the school, because the candy issue if true is a classic example where 20/20 makes one see "red flags" that they never would have picked up on. It is a very sad situation - truly every parent's nightmare... but could happen anywhere. It's truly horrific how these perverts are drawn to schools. Sidwell and Beauvoir both did their best handle extremely tragic incidents. The only difference is that Beauvoir's guy fled the police. Sidwell's teacher didn't run. I hope all schools review and update their codes of conduct for teachers. A few rotten apples spoil it for the rest. Sad but true.

PP here. I meant to say 20/20 HINDSIGHT. My apologies for the omission.
