Yes, it’s in Silver Spring. You’re disgusting.

You are disgusting for calling the person disgusting. It was a joke.

Tasteless joke. “Chevy Chase Section 8” is a pretty gross thing to say.

People like to pretend that the eastern sections of Chevy Chase are just as nice and name drop Chevy Chase, their delusions are fine but to point them out is Gross? What a basic person you are. There is a reason it is called Grubby road

People who live in the eastern sections of Chevy Chase are not deluded if and when they say they live in Chevy Chase.

The same thing happens all the time between Wootton and Churchill. People will actually choose Wootton over Churchill because they are intimidated about the wealth at Churchil and don't want their kids to feel like a lower class citizen. Wootton and Churchill are on par academically unlike the huge gap in academic between BCC and Einstein but its the same mentality.

Only people at Wootton think it is one the same level (at any level) as Churchill.
There isn't one other person in the area who does.

Wootton is not on the same level as Churchill. It's better by every metric, and everyone knows it.

The last rankings put Wootton ahead of Churchill. Wootton sends more kids to the Blair SMACs program. STEM, band and music are far stronger at Wootton. Humanties and the visual arts are stronger at Churchill.

No one sees Churchill as an academic powerhouse just an extremely wealthy school with lots of tutors. The tutors are probably coming from Wootton.

1) That was the only time for the last ten years at least, that a ranking has Wootton ahead of Churchill and we all know the controversy regarding USNEWS rankings this year.

2) When was the last time Wootton has any Intel/Regeneron scholars? I have seen Churchill for the last few years but don't remember having seen Wootton

Btw, I am neutral . I have no "stock " in either school.

OK here are all these "high poverty" families that attend RHPS living? Rents and housing prices in that area aren't cheap.

This is what I am wondering. Silver Spring prices and getting BCC is an amazing deal. Prices could be depressed because of a stigma of living Silver Spring BUT it can't be that bad. Since BCC is far, far better than any other school in Silver Spring it should be the most expensive area in Silver Spring.

I don't understand how RHPS can have low income families. Is there a subsidized apartment building that only allows low income residents, homeless shelter, or halfway house for ex cons with children or something?

PP, look at a map. Here are the service areas, to get you started.

Geographically, isn’t it odd to split the eastern side of the school zone when the schools split to CC/NCC? Shouldn’t the whole area move on to NCC since it’s north of EW Highway, and also because NCC has more space?

Yes, it's odd, geographically, but it was considered preferable, demographically, to send some of the apartment buildings to NCC and some to CC. (And the eastern-most Summit Hills buildings go to Woodlin.)

Summit Hills is now turned over some but when we grew up it was not particularly nice and we weren't allow to visit friends as it was a pretty unsafe area. Clearly you didn't grow up here if you aren't aware of that area.

I lived in Summit Hills 20 years ago after college. Get a grip.

+1. If I were buying now, I'd get a house in the Viers Mill ES zone. Currently zoned to Wheaton HS, but highly likely to be rezoned to Woodward. It's the closet DCC school to Woodward, and would provide some much-valued diversity in demographics.

The advantage of this would be, even if the expected rezoning doesn't happen, you haven't really lost. You will have paid Wheaton prices and you can sell based on Wheaton prices, if you decide to move. Of course moving is a pain and has transaction costs, but for an OP who seems incredibly concerned about buying with a school premium only to see it zoned away, this might be appealing.

OP take this advice. Given that you can’t risk a drop in home value, I’d buy somewhere where prices are more likely to go up or stay the same. Or just rent for a few years.

You all honestly think this OP would be happy living in the Viers Mill ES zone? Really?

Actually, there’s some brand new townhomes going up and there are some pretty houses (just small) back in there. Overlooking the park etc. beautiful land and location. A lot of those homes just need a little TLC.

It doesn't seem likely to me that a person who wants to pay more than they ought to (aka "stretch") for a house, in the belief that this would buy a better education for their child, would be happy at a school with so many students from low-income families.

As a Viers Mill parent, I agree and I appreciate the candor of several posters in this thread. I would very much like for VMES to remain a hidden gem. If you believe that your child specifically needs a socio-economically curated environment to thrive academically, then you really should consider options.

Its the same as North Potomac being Gaithersburg/Rockville and North Bethesda being Rockville.

It's exactly the same, except for the whole part about it actually being an incorporated Chevy Chase municipality.

There’s a poster who comes on to all of these threads to argue vigorously that anything East of Beach drive is Silver Spring even though the county, the state, the federal government all consider the border to be Grubb Road. Not sure why she is so offended by Rock Creek Forest but she is.

So once again: west of Grubb road = Chevy Chase
East of Grubb Road = Silver Spring

It’s really not fair to those who spent a million or more to buy a house in Chevy chase when others just rent those crummy apartments that are “technically” Chevy chase but not really. Brings home values down.

Can we stop this stupid joke? The limousine liberalism in this thread stinks.

There literally is a Chevy Chase Section 8 - it’s the Town of Chevy Chase.
