Someone I know graduated from there a few years ago, non magnet, loved their theatre program. From what I have heard, Wootton has a model UN program. I don't know much about it though. |
I would prefer lower test scores as it makes it less stressful and of course the smart but not perfect kids will be ranked higher. That said, I don’t want all the fights, sex in hallways, anti-semitism, and asylum seekers with a 3rd grade education in my school to get those higher ranks. Churchill boundaries won’t be changed. They already have every low income area in their area and there really isn’t any others around them. |

The board said it's prioritizing diversity and reviewing all boundaries. Churchill is not as racially diverse or socioeconomically diverse as other schools in MCPS. Redrawing Churchill's boundaries could not only balance out Churchill but affect bordering schools.
For example, most of the user rich live off of River Road. Those students north of Travillah Road course be rezoned for Poolesville High School. With the decreased population of that change, Churchill's boundary could extend into what is currently Richard Montgomery. Either down Montrose Road, Wootton Pkwy, or Falls Road. Other options would be extended the boundary into what is now Walter Johnson. |
The music/theatre program is very strong. The beloved director of 30+ years retired but I understand his replacement is carrying it on well... |
And I would prefer my kids not be exposed to the designer drugs in Churchill. Sex in the hallway? Eh.. your kids are having sex all over, too. They just haven't been caught. Churchill also had swatsikas etched in their schools. But of course, the excuse was that it was probably some kid who thought he was being funny or something. The same excuses Churchill parents use don't apply to RM kids apparently. https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/education/swastika-found-on-desk-in-maryland-high-school-classroom/2018/11/01/739d79aa-dde9-11e8-b732-3c72cbf131f2_story.html?noredirect=on&utm_term=.79a530ad776f I'd also rather my child not go to a HS surrounded by entitled snowflakes who's mommy tells the teachers that their kids are just too tired to take their final. |
Um.. ok <5% FARMs is nothing compared to neighboring RM with about 20% FARMs. But I guess to people like you, the few FARMs students you do have is enough, and you don't want more. |
|
The PP was referencing that there are no more nearby areas with high FARMS students to add into Churchill. You have got to accept that if your goal is to add lots of poor students to Churchill then they will need to be on a very long bus ride past other schools. Wootton is the same geographic situation.
Its not going to happen. No kid wants to be bussed somewhere because they were picked for being poor. No kid wants to be bussed somewhere because they were picked for being rich either. It expensive and unpopular with everyone who is effected. |
There are no high schools on Montrose/Randolph Road or near Congressional Lane. Those areas are only a 10 minute drive from Churchill and would provide the diversity needed if the apartment complexes were included in the boundary change. Also, currently some students attending Churchill are on a bus for 45 minutes and would have a shorter commute if redistricted to Poolesville or Wootton. There actually is a community split in half between Wootton and Churchill in which the Churchill students ride a bus past Wootton. Some Cabin John students who will eventually go to Wootton ride past Hoover Middle School and Churchill High School everyday. The Board of Education can redraw boundaries anyway they want. They ultimately have the final say and may feel pressure from civil rights groups to balance out schools anyway possible. Redrawing school boundaries is a controversial move but probably needed if diversity is a school priority. |
Yep... and it is for BOE... like I said - send Twinbrook ES to Churchill to balance diversity. RM will get rezoned eventually, too, with Crown HS. So will Wootton. |
| You are crazy if you think that the western areas in Potomac that feed Churchill are closer to Poolesville than Churchill. Poolesville is much farther out than you think. I know because we live past the western Potomac area that feeds Churchiil and are in the small area that goes to Wootton near River Rd. Poolesville is an amazing school and the life sciences magnet are excellent very popular but the drive is bad. |
unlikely since nw and QO border right next to Wootton. the last stretch of river rd is zoned to NW |
+1 the BOE could ease overcrowding at RM and add diversity to Churchill with the change. The only caveat would be that students will need to be rezoned out of Churchill because the school is at overcapacity. Poolesville, Wootton, Walter Johnson, or the new Woodward HS would be options. |

What is interesting about RM is that the area surrounding it is changing. Unlike areas in the east where the low poverty is so pervasive and zoned in its just not going anywhere, the area near RM is changing over. Cheap SFH rental houses are being bought by owner occupants or developers and remodeled. Developers are trying to build nicer condos and THs. Rockville seems eager to clean up the Twin brook area so within 10 years this area may not be low income anymore. I seriously doubt that any would chop up Twin brook into three sections to sprinkle the poor kids across Churchill. Wootton and RM. Even if they did so this, those areas that were rezoned into Churchill or Wootton would automatically jump in value and turn over to UMC families. I'd say that any of the 3 are a safe bet for the next 10 years. |
Because there's nothing problematic about sending poor kids on a long bus ride so that Churchill can have some kids from low-income families? Also, what does "to balance diversity" mean? |
MCPS doesn't think it that's problematic given that they send low income HS kids on a 15min bus ride now to go to a school. MCPS does think it's problematic that one cluster has < 5% FARMs and not overcrowded, while the neighboring one has 20% AND is over crowded. "Balance diversity" means not having one cluster have < 5% FARMS while the neighboring one has 20% FARMs. |
