+1 I had the lyrics to "Just Like Heaven" pinned up on my college dorm room wall. ![]() |
I think she was from a wealthy family that ignored her? I can't remember either. I found Judd Nelson SO sexy in this movie! |
+2 Robert Smith is the greatest musical artist of our generation. |
I’m an older Gen X and I’d say Alphaville’s Forever Young. Or Big in Japan. |
"Melt with You" by Modern English. |

Except now all I see is cheese and a hamburger when I hear that song. It was ruined. |
High school class of 1993. For me, these are the defining songs- Alive - Pearl Jam Under the Bridge - Red Hot Chili Peppers Also, Nine Inch Nails, Counting Crows, and Tori Amos Smells like Teen Spirit was never a favorite of mine. It was all over MTV and it got a lot of attention as being a "teen anthem" but I didn't know anyone who actually liked the song. I guess they are all here on DCUM haha. |
Young gen Xers loved Dave Matthews. |
Younger Gen Xer here. I didn’t care for Teen Spirit either. I always thought Nirvana was overrated. |
Older millennials remember these too. If something is relevant to two generations, does it count less? |
Nirvana and grunge in general provided a much needed musical douching of late 80s hairband crap. Yeah there were fun songs here and there, but it all became a parody of itself with hits like Cherry Pie, Unskinny Bop, dirty rotten filthy stinking rich etc |

+1 It's so interesting when people say they think Nirvana is overrated or they and their friends didn't like the song...I don't think that's what is meant by a song that is definitive for a generation. Nevermind CLEARLY resonated with people when it came out. Yes, the music industry was different then and the industry pushed it...AND people bought it. The record industry has pushed many things that people have said 'no thanks' to. |
