A man that grew up in Galax, VA was the FBI Special Agent in Charge in Richmond until recently. He has a Bachelor’s from Roanoke and a Master’s from American. He started his law enforcement career as a special agent for the Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control. I’m guessing no one here has considered that entry level job for their children. Look where a Roanoke degree can lead.

The Fairfax County Police Chief has a Bachelor’s in English from Towson and earned a Master’s in Management from Johns Hopkins while serving as a police officer. He’s also a graduate of the FBI National Executive Institute. He made $276,000 in 2024, a $17,000 raise (6.6%) over his 2023 salary.
The beauty of law enforcement is that they take any and all degrees. FCPD is the largest municipal police force in Virginia. They offer several specialized units that allow life long learners to enjoy several progressions throughout their career. Some examples are the Marine Unit, K-9, SWAT, Explosives Removal, the Specalized Response Unit, Underwater Search and Recovery, and the Helicopter Division. FCPD offers a $15,000 hiring incentive. The starting salary is $71,864, but with a college degree that goes up to $75,457. There aren’t many recent grad English or Poli Sci majors starting at $75k. |

It’s important to remind your young, or incoming college students that law enforcement organizations routinely attend college career fairs searching for intelligent, driven individuals that are looking to serve rather than just work.
Below is a link to the 13 LE partners that will be represented at the UMD career fair later this month. https://app.joinhandshake.com/career_fairs/56989/employers_list?industries=1022&page=1&per_page=25 |
JMU has a 2 day career fair this month with 16 different law enforcement agencies scheduled to attend.

The law enforcement profession is very well represented at these college fairs. At this George Mason career fair they account for over 6% of the employers registered.

+1000 But they'll push their kids into finance/tech/MBB to literally chew up and spit out companies, sell them for parts, and destroy the middle class. It's disgusting. |
All graduating seniors should be required to do a year of actual volunteer service 8 hours a day, 40 hours a week. Being the lifeguard at the country club pool wouldn’t count. A significant portion of 18 year olds lack real perspective. |
It’s obvious DCUM is very “me-me”. It’s about the test prep space race, academic prestige shopping and IB or bust. I’d call them shallow, but that would give them too much credit. Volunteering for them is a box check for the application process. These personality traits are a mental illness. |
Interesting to see the LE recruits at the college career fairs. I’ll mention to my son to check out his college. He’s a sophomore in college, accounting major, but so interested in FD and LE. |
Also, Federal LE jobs qualify for a full retirement at an earlier point than ordinary civil service jobs do. |
FBI, and Treasury love to hire accounting majors for LE. Even better if a CPA. So much white collar crime involves accounting. |
+ 1. I was a reference on my friend’s FBI application 30 years ago. I was so Proud to get a call from the FBI on his behalf. He was an accountant and just retired from the FBI a few years ago. |
The FBI also loves CS degrees. |
