Trump stole $4 million from NY 9/11 first responders fund.
No one should be wanting their children to be cops in MAGADONIA or Trump Kingdom. As for firefighters to read Project 2025 before you idiots thing this is a good idea for your kid. No they will not be making $250,000 read Project 2025!!!!!!! |
My nephew has been training to be a firefighter in the Midwest. He pivoted to EMT because there are so few paid firefighting jobs in the area (a lot of volunteer squads and $40k base salary for paid). He works for a private ambulance service (common in IN) now and brings in about $38k including overtime and has experienced multiple workplace injuries at 27 years old. It’s a grueling route for most. |
Project 2025 no more overtime pay.
These jobs will be paid nothing. |
At one point in my life, I was using a lot of ambulances, and I recall one of the EMTs telling me it's physically taxing work that takes its' toll on the body. Would your nephew consider pivoting to plumbing? Still physical, different type of emergencies, but higher pay. |
Word on the street is that Bucknell has a pipeline into both FDNY and NYPD jobs that makes HYP grads green with envy. |
The risks are very real. In addition to the well known ones, there is the heart disease and hypertension that is a risk in both fields and the cancer risks for fire fighters goes well beyond lung cancer. I would be really proud if any of my kids selected this type of public service. But I am secretly relieved that none choose to be a firefighter Also, because of my job I see salaries of firefighters and police in the DMV on a daily basis. They aren’t making anywhere close to a quarter of a million a year even with overtime. These jobs are passion jobs. |
FDNY is far from the norm! My dear college friend's husband is a firefighter for a small city in VA. His salary is around 60-65K. A captain makes more. She is a public school teacher with 25+ years of experience, and she makes more than him. They are doing okay but are not at all wealthy.
In some areas, many firefighters are volunteers. |
Firefighting is great but read the NYT piece this year on lack of respirators. Your kid will likely develop a respiratory illness that could kill them or cancer. |
Lol great comment. |
+ 💯 FDNY is very competitive to get into and many firefighters work OT shifts. My nephew is interested in it and it’s a long road; he just completed NYC EMS as a stepping stone into the FD and loves it so far. |
I haven’t read it. Buf how can federal government stop local governments paying overtime if it’s earned? I’m a first responder and the local government pays my salary not trump. If I have to stay late or work an extra shift I get paid. |
divorce attorney friend told me she'd never allow her daughter to marry a firefighter.
(as far as you can allow anything of course ... just a saying .. lets not go crazy... just indicating rampant cheating in the culture .. of course her daughter can do what she wants .. if she had a daughter ... she doesnt even have a daughter, just making a point) |
A big thank you to your nephew and all other first responders. True heroes. |
Someone get this PP a medic … |
Probably because their parents aren't posting here on the college forum. They know what they want to do and are already taking steps to get there. They are both important careers; both are physically demanding. Police work requires a high degree of "emotional intelligence" that many do not have. One needs to be the right type of person to do either sort of work, unlike office-drone work, which pretty much anyone can do with the right training and experience. |
