Colleges for conservative student

No. Again, just because a school is in the south doesn’t mean it’s conservative. If you don’t believe me, you can google this info by searching “Tulane demographics politics” and find that only a small percentage of Tulane students describe themselves as conservative.

If they are a normal conservative like Mitt Romney, Liz Cheney, or George W. Bush then they should go to any school with everyone else.
If they are a MAGA than they should not go to college at all because either their worldview is inconsistent with a higher education.

So being religious conservative isn't "normal"?

If you’re not familiar with the “prosperity Christians” who want America to be a Theocracy, you’re not paying attention. They think Trump was sent by God, despite all the evidence that he’s more like the Anti Christ. No, this is not normal and it’s very much cult thinking.

To the extent these people exist, they truly must be a teeny tiny segment of society nad not mainstream religious.

FIRE gives it a very high free speech ranking.

Stop trying to make FIRE happen.

They’re controlling our government right now! Have you heard of The Heritage Foundation? Are you familiar with the Alabama-DC pipeline?

Actually, evangelicals and prosperity Christians are a pretty large segment of the religious population in the US right now.

So if you are some of these, go to Liberty or Non Jones or Oral Roberts University.

If you are old fashioned conservative, go to most higher priced private colleges in the southeast where a lot of rich parents send their kids. The students are usually conservative or apolitical. Washington and Lee, University of Richmond, Wake Forest, Clemson, etc...

Do you ask the same question whenever a poster seeks colleges for their very liberal kid?

I don’t see that question much because most colleges are, by nature of their mission, open-minded places.

One of my liberal kids went to college in Alabama. We don’t hide from diversity and we don’t need our beliefs to be coddled or validated.

Actually I had the same question as the PP. Sure, your liberal kid is getting exposure to the real world and you should be proud. Most conservative people don't want to be in a situation where they are cancelled the moment they open their mouth. Places like the ivies and extremely liberal lacs are echo chambers for progressives. In fact most universities are. I think OP wants to find a place where their DC can find friends who have similar interests. Nothing at all wrong with that.

If your kid has a solid foundation from home regarding how to "think", they will be fine anywhere. Much depends on the kid. If the kid does better surrounded by like minded kids, I would probably reconsider sending them to some progressive cesspool that is an intolerant echo chamber for left wing Marxist ideology. Most schools don't fit into that category.

The problem I have with most people is that they rely on the schools to teach their kids how to think. Parents frequently offload that responsibility and then have heartburn because their chosen school turned out to be something different. If you give your kid a solid foundation at home, they should be fine anywhere, even if the ideas being presented aren't in line with what they have been taught at home. Reinforcing group think should never be the goal - learning how to defend your principles is the goal. If they aren't worth examining with a critical eye, then they aren't worth defending.

I have a conservative kid who survived 4 yrs at a liberal top-10 university. The experience only solidified the kid's beliefs, as the classmates' views seemed increasingly preposterous the more the kid heard them.

But, it's really hilarious that leftists think conservatives are cowards for not wanting to be immersed in progressive dogma for 4 years at these "open-minded" schools, considering that places like Brown and Middlebury need to break out the coloring books and comfort animals whenever a conservative even attempts to deliver a speech.

Also considering they would never in a million years want their own liberal kids to attend a conservative college. They’re such hypocrites.

PP is upset that her kid’s school is at the bottom of the list for free speech.

What is one thing OP’s child could say in class that would get them canceled? I’m serious about this. What’s a conservative position, and don’t say economics because that isn’t true (look at models showing GOP economic models lose). Don’t say marriage because that isn’t true (look at current admin). Is he going to talk about climate change policy or going to deny climate change exists?

Aside from going back to former immigration levels and hating trans people, what is there for conservatives to talk about?

Why would they fear getting cancelled when this admin is canceled people left and right for things expressly allowed in our constitution?

Conservatives don't fear getting canceled by the administration - though I'd argue various actual conservatives get canceled by this administration all the time. They fear getting ostracized by peers or even shouted down the way conservative speakers (MAGA or actual historical conservatives) are all the time. If "canceling" isn't a concern why does it happen to a guy like Rich Lowry of National Review as recently as September 2024?

Depending on the flavor of conservative, don't lump us in with this administration. A real conservative decries their horrible use of cancel culture the same as they do on the left.

No one is suggesting a conservative kid go to Grinnell or Reed. The idea that a conservative kids can’t be comfortable at most universities is what’s silly and snowflake. No, my liberal kids are not interested in Hillsdale or Liberty. But they are perfectly happy and comfortable at their red and purple state universities.
