I’m the PP whose child told them their teacher said that. I want to make clear that I can not verify that the teacher was referring to Hamas specifically or just generally referring to what terrorism is. The discussion evolved into a general one about the conflict and terrorism. All I do know for sure is that my Jewish child was confused and hysterical about the whole discussion once they got home. We have family in Israel. The takeaway my child got from the whole discussion was NOT that Hamas is a terrorist organization. Even though full stop that’s what Hamas is. President Biden said it in his address. I showed my child the Presidents speech. There should be no confusion. No equivocation by teachers. The only thing that needed to be said yesterday (if anything at all) by a teacher is that Hamas committed a terrorist act against Jewish Israelis. Yesterday was not the time for a nuanced discussion on the intricacies of the Israeli Palestinian conflict. |
Nobody is saying you need to speak a single word on Palestinian children. People are saying that expressing their own sadness regarding the treatment of the Palestinian people doesn’t make them antisemites. |
So the teacher talked about terrorism though? It seems weird to talk about it and not apply. I'm sorry your child was upset. We all come at discussions with our own filters, so it's possible that others heard something different. The facts are, however, that two people can view the same act in very different ways. So, in that sense the teacher was correct if it was a general discussion. Demented people rationalize gun violence all the time. |
You are ignorant AF. |
Nutty. You are literally saying cannot discussing Jewish trauma without Palestinian trauma is unacceptable. Really gross. |
What??? You really have a comprehension problem. Not the PP btw |

this topic is about what DCPS teachers should say to Jewish children the day after a major anti-semitic terror attack. |
While clearly horrible, I don't view this as something that is widespread or condoned by DCPS. It made national news, and she was fired. |
OK, are you saying that beheading babies, raping women, annd taking hostages are acts of a government? Because I see those as terrorist acts, not part of governmental military action. Providing “context” to heinous acts of terrorism sounds a whole heck of a lot like justification to me. But if you must have context, Hamas makes no secret of wanting to kill not only Israeli, but Jews. All of them. Or is that not the context you meant? |
A 'discussion' where even mentioning the existence of Palestinian civilians is deemed an anti-semitic attack is not a discussion. The only thing that would fit the bill of "only discuss Jewish pain or you're a bigot" is a statement of support. Like I said: if that's what people want be honest about it. |
Nobody is saying that. Express your sadness. It is sad. Unless, of course, you just so happen to feel the need to chime in to express that sadness whenever anyone talks about the feelings of Jewish children. |
It's the same war happening in real-time. Why do you think we should separate the two? |
Yes it is totally possible other people heard something different. But I’m not sure why this had to morph into a general discussion on terrorism and the conflict to begin with. Unless that was the planned lesson of the day - which is was not. It’s like all these other “yes, buts” we’ve been hearing. Our children are constantly told in dcps to “hold space” for various marginalized groups and people. Why is it that we could not hold space to the innocent Jews killed yesterday. And yes - they were not just targeted because they’re Israeli. This was not a political attack. They were targeted by Hamas because they were Jews. And if you think the Hamas brand of anti-semitism isn’t connected to what you see here in the states - you are delusional. |
wow ok. curious if you think you also have to discuss black crime rates when you discuss police brutality? |
