No, you’re not the only one. I’m completely flabbergasted by all the “we can’t imagine living anywhere else in the US, or world, but Old Town!” posts.

I am not sure there have been I can’t imagine living anywhere but Old Town posts. I think there have been posts defending Old Town as a place to live despite ACPS being a poorly functioning school system.

Clarification that no one in Old Town are the ACPS apologists and deniers.

That’s elsewhere in the city like Del Ray. Also on council, school board, the police chief.

Actually plenty of Old Town residents are apologists and deniers. There is a substantial portion of UMC white Lyles Crouch parents that are gun ho on ACPS and, believe me, will pull out the racism card if you dare to suggest alternatives to the failing GWMS.

Maybe at one time but that has not been our experience in the last several years. Lyles Crouch lost something like 100 students during the pandemic. It has rebounded somewhat but not fully to where it was pre-pandemic. Many of my kids' classmates went private/parochial and did not return, and there is even more attrition from ACPS going from 5th grade at LC to middle school.

Shutdown, not the pandemic. Normal places didn’t close schools for years.

True. ACPS was far behind even Fairfax, Arlington and Loudon. It was the one school board meeting where one school board member (Ramee Gentry) said Hutchings and the consultant's work was unacceptable. Her voice was shaking and she was obviously scared to go up against him but she did it.

It’s even more damning when you consider the amount of time, attention, and performance by everyone on renaming the high school compared to, you know, actually reopening it.

Alexandria City government cares far more about virtue signaling than about actually making things better.

And same with the citizens who elect them.

I voted against all these people. Unfortunately most city residents will just vote for anyone who has a D next to their name, even if their policies are driving the city into the ground.

It’s so unipolar the primaries in supposedly non partisan offices are the election.

Or they don’t bother to hold an election because no one else is running. Or like for mayor that wasn’t really a an election.

(D)emocracy.

Lol, then take your whiny GOP butt and run for office! Since Alexandria is obviously a secret right-wing city being held hostage by Dems, you should EASILY win every election you enter!

Anyway, cry harder.

All are welcome here!

Nah, the facist-adjacent GOP is absolutely not welcome. If we ever have you a different impression, then I do apologize.

Sit down and STFU sweetie. You don’t speak for us. You sound about as lady-like as Christine Fair. In fact, you probably are that wretched woman.

IDK who that is but if she’s against GOP Christofacism and Moms4Hitler, then it’s an honor to be compared.

Of course you don’t. Progressive playthings rarely know their fellow dupes.

They are, as the kids say, just so cringe.

As someone who knows both areas well, you played yourself.

So it's never going to get better here?

You get what you vote for. Hate to say it but it’s so obvious.

Sadly, no. I moved here 20 years ago, well before I had kids, and the schools seem to be going in the wrong direction. Equity for all seems to mean good schools for none.

I'm more sad about the city than the school system although both are pretty messed up.

Correct and there is no pressure for changes. Just listen to the public comments to the Board on the lack of teachers (and thus the lack of learning for certain groups of teachers), and then the Board receiving a report from the head of HR and barely acknowledging in the extensive issues raised in the public comments in their questions to the head of HR.

It always cheerleading for ACPS by the Board rather than demanding accountability from the Central Office on down.

+1000

The school board's new obsession with changing the elections has everything to do with them staying in power and ensuring that there are no alternative voices on the board. It's very clear, they have no real interest in academic quality.

And you are right, there is no pressure for change. There were two parents who spoke up about the closed bathrooms. Two. This school board believes that silence is support.

do the the UMC kids who "are in all honors and never see the violence" have access to bathrooms?

I've lived here for 20 years and this has always been true of Alexandria. What's changed?
