Pretty sure we're discussing VA state schools - so publics. W&L doesn't belong on this list.

OP: "Virginia had such great colleges."

Don't see "commonwealth / state.... public only" exclusively in there.

W&L is a VA college, and ranking wise in VA, the list is pretty much in line with people who know colleges in the commonwealth.

But this is DCUM....

Ok... but if you'd read the thread, you'll notice all the schools being discussed are publics.

Doesn't mean that privates cannot be discussed. And OP didn't limit the discussion to publics.

Virginia colleges.

Reading comprehension is important.

I think GMU, JMU, and VCU are roughly even as a next tier. Maybe one of the three will separate itself over time

My impression is that both GMU and JMU are on strong upward trajectories. I'm hoping VCU as well, but just don't hear as much about it.

CNU is the forgotten school where their admissions are harder to get into than GMU and JMU. They're small so you don't hear about them as much, but an impressive school nontheless

So too is knowing what one is talking about. And if privates are discussed, and Richmond is not included, well...

UF and UGA are as good as or better than comparable Virginia options, larger, and virtually free in state

But most reading this are OOS so your point is irrelevant. UF is $46,000 OOS and UGA is $48,000 OOS. GMU (where DC went) is $13,404 tuition and $27K all in when housing is added. Add is the benefit of driving instead of flying and you can see why in-state Virginia is so popoular.

OK, but why are we celebrating Virginia for having in state options that cost 40k a year when other states manage to offer comparable schools for far cheaper

UVA tuition is between 15,000-27,000, depending on college/program

You're welcome to complain about VA schools, but don't make stuff up.
You forgot the Room +Board +fees part! You can not just look up "tuition" at a school to think that is what it is going to cost you. Nope Add another $10-20K Even if your kid lives off campus(unless your kid is paying for that)

It is a great school, but tends to be a bit on the conservative side according to a few of my DC friends.

If including private schools, Richmond at least would appear somewhere in that list.

I can debunk this. My daughter goes here and it is definitely not as conservative. Not sure where that reputation came from, but the students are inclusive and for all rights and definitely not Trumpers!

It isn't clear based on stats. GMU, JMU, VCU, MWU, CNU, and VMI have pretty similar stats.

Yup, it's about 43K a year for engineering tuition, fees, room/board at UVA and 46K oos for Georgia Tech engineering tuition, fees, room/board and its about 24K instate for GT. GA offers Hope and Zell scholarships so many of the kids are going to school for only the cost of room and board. Same in Florida.

Agree. Either #4 or #5.

A lot of public VA options ( some better than others), but good private options too. Richmond and W&L are definitely ranked high.

Honestly, anything that isn't ultra-liberal is considered "conservative" on DCUM. Christopher Newport is middle-of-the-road politically. You're probably not likely to find LWNJ protesters there, which is a huge plus.
