I have money, but this is where I cheap out

I enjoy spending a few hundred bucks on a nice date night with my s/o, but I cook most meals at home after shopping at Aldi, Food Lion and H-Mart. I just bought a bag of chicken leg quarters on sale for .69 a pound. Not only that I cut off all the back pieces and made a delicious meal of fried chicken backs.

I have a big, really nice house, but it’s in a much vastly less expensive exurb and I refinanced as interest rates dropped until I got to 1.875%.

I spent $20K on a home theater, but was thrilled to cut my internet bill by 70% when cutting the cord. I buy 4K physical releases but only when on sale.

I enjoy buying an occasional designer clothes item, but buy most of my clothes online from Banana Republic and Brooks Brothers when they’re more than 70% off. I also have started buying clothes at Target.

I have lots of nice furniture, but most of it came from Craigslist or FB marketplace.

I pay cleaners every other week, but I love yard work so I do it all myself.

I bought a new luxury car - 10 years ago and am still driving it, and will until it dies.

I love this thread and would have thought most people make these kinds of trade offs, but I have friends who give me serious crap for the things I save money on.

We hardly ever buy a luxury car and keep our cars for 10 years or more. Always buy Honda, Toyota or Lexus (not luxury in my mind) Never ever buy top of line car always middle of the road package.

Eating out a once a week.

We own expensive properties however all in good locations can sell pretty easily even at high price points. For furnishings, we used Ikea, Target, and Calligarius (only for some kitchen chairs). We even have DH coffee and side tables from college LOL.

No Starbucks. I love coffee however can make at home.

Painting we always do ourselves.

No house cleaners. We make the mess we clean it up no matter how busy life is. Same with yard work. Nothing wrong with us doing it.

But, I buy new clothes mostly from Costco, Kohls, Target, Macy's, Old Navy, TJ Maxx, Marshalls, Amazon, Lands End and Nordstrom Rack. I buy clothes on sale. If I buy something name brand, I will buy it on sale. Like buying NorthFace parkas on sale.

I do not buy souvenirs or mementos from my trips abroad. I only buy fridge magnets and anything that can be consumed quickly (chocolate, wine, snacks, cheese, coffee...).

I get a haircut every month, but I do all my beauty treatments at home from coloring my hair to skin treatments, waxing, mani pedi etc.

I host a lot and I hire a helper for the event but I cook all the food myself because I can control quality, taste and cost. (I am an excellent cook).

We do not have pets though we lavish love on our parents's dog. Pets cost a lot of money and also I cannot stand pet hair, smell and taking care of them.

I do not pay for lawn treatments. I have seeded clover on top of the existing grass, and reseed every year.

I buy my groceries from a number of stores. I am not store loyal at all. My favorite stores for groceries - Costco, Whole Foods, Great Wall (Chinese store), Patel Brothers (Indian store). I will visit Aldis, Target, Walmart, Traders Joe and Giant for miscellaneous grocery items. I buy wine in bulk from Costco in VA.

Wow. Your clothing shopping practices are horrible for the environment, esp. the shopping at Old Navy.

Just curious - why don't you buy second hand clothing? Are you averse to it or don't have time to look for it in thrift stores, etc?
I have purchased silk Joie tops in Goodwill for 3.99. On online thrift stores I purchased a Club Monaco dress for around $50 (New $400). It looks like it's never been worn. 100% silk and gorgeous.
You can't find that quality or those deals in Costco, Target, Macy's, etc.

I would never buy used clothes if I can afford not too..would rather save money elsewhere.

Home improvements I can't justify them and always get the lowest but and hold them accountable or just do it myself

Cars and phones. We have nice cars (BMW and Porsche) but we never buy new. I only buy refurbished phones.

I’m floored by the people saying they don’t spend on clothes. That’s the one thing I upgraded after I started making real money and it’s been SO worth it. A $$$ sweater will last years longer than and costs less overall than buying a new $ sweater every year. Plus the fit and feel are so much better.

But I don’t spend on restaurants (I’ve never been to a Michelin on my own dime), home decor, cameras/electronics. I buy things like cleaning supplies and some foods generic, if the quality is the same.

Our house. We have one bathroom and I just can't imagine plunking down 25-30K to add another one. Same with a kitchen remodel.

Hate wasting money going to restaurants. Food isn’t my vice.

Clothes and luxury cars. Not worth it to me.

DP, but I kind of agree. Now that I have money, I try to do better. I buy clothing made from sustainable materials and practices and not from sweatshops. This means I have to stick to a few known brands, or buy second hand when I really want something different.

To me, spending my money wisely on earth friendly and people friendly clothes is more important than saving a dollar. Now that I have money. Obviously, my calculus was different when I couldn't afford that

I shop at Walmart all the time. I can't imagine buying a pair of jeans anywhere else.
