USA only country in the world where life does not come to a halt when it's soccer team plays in WC

A game in the most popular sport in the entire world.
Billions will be watching it around the world.

Meanwhile in the USA most people will not be watching. Life goes on. Nobody cares.

People in the US are too wrapped up in the rat race here.

That’s a stupid theory considering how much time Americans give to baseball, basketball, football, Olympics, etc. That soccer hasn’t taken hold as well in the US isn’t because people aren’t willing to step away from work.

This. I can’t believe the atrocities are not all over the news. An estimated 6500 migrant workers died in Qatar getting ready for this World Cup. Horrifying.

I’m so freaking tired of being virtuous. Can’t eat this, can’t buy that, can’t watch that because of something horrible. I just wanna watch some soccer. Argentina/Saudi match this morning was great soccer even if I didn’t like the outcome. Anytime MBS is happy, I am unhappy.

Most of the International Peoplehood of the Woke just found about the working conditions in Qatar that have been going on for years, unto years. Let the IPW wallow in their bleating nonsense while they celebrate their national day or mourning on Thanksgiving because the English settlers in what became the United States killed far more people -- whether indigenous, enslaved, or indentured -- in building the United States.

Honestly the people most critical of the Qatar WC seem to be Europeans, specifically northern and Western Europeans. It seems a little sour grapes at times + borderline anti-Islam/anti-Middle Eastern. I don’t see nearly as much handwringing criticism coming from the US media, probably flying under the radar here a bit because of how the World Cup is conflicting with the much more important (American) football, both pro and college. But when I see people screeching and screaming online about how bad this WC is, especially on the Reddit echo chambers, it usually seems to be Europeans.

Europeans are very politically aware. Americans not so much. Europeans also love a good protest. Americans prefer to be oblivious.

I guess you were not aware of the protests against the Vietnam war? Civil Rights demonstrations? Women's march against the orange man? Black Lives Matter movement?

When was the last time American protestors forced a government to resign?

The difference is that governments resigning is how it works in a parliamentary system and not in our system. Our government is elected on a schedule.

That’s cool with me.

If the sport being played was one that Americans cared about they would watch. Plenty of people will be watching in the middle of the day on a random Thursday in march for the first round of the tournament

Soccer is stupid. No one cares.

Are you a total moron or just a jerk? How do you say that when EVERY country plays soccer? I mean I get if you don't watch or like it but clearly everybody DOES care about soccer. They may not care about NFL, NHL, NBA or other sports but soccer is the ONE sport every country in the world gets down with. Popularity differs but oh yeah, millions absolutely care.

Live your life and let others live theirs. I would never waste my time watching a game. It just does not interest me. I would rather be outside doing my own sports. If I must be inside-- I'd rather watch a movie. I read sports recaps in the paper-- only takes minutes instead of hours.

The most poor and desperate kids play football and basketball in the US. Soccer is an upper middle class sport for relatively well off kids in the US. Hell, look at Weah - he’s the son of the President of Liberia lol

Here’s a hint - if the most competitive action for your sport when a teen is a “travel league” then it’s not very important. Football and basketball? High school state championships are everything. High school soccer? Lacrosse? No one gives a sh#t; that’s why parents shell out huge money for elite travel teams.

In short, America’s best youth athletes don’t play soccer. They are slotted into other sports at a young age. Whereas, in the rest of the world, soccer is pretty much the only organized sport available.

It is true that our best athletes in the US get pushed into other sports. Imagine if Derrick Henry or like prime Antonio Brown played soccer, they’d be unstoppable.

And why does it matter to you how many are watching? Watch and enjoy it--or don't.

Wrong.

Do you think people in other countries do not have to work either? Yet they still find a way to watch. Bosses/management/HR allow it.
