USA only country in the world where life does not come to a halt when it's soccer team plays in WC

This. I can’t believe the atrocities are not all over the news. An estimated 6500 migrant workers died in Qatar getting ready for this World Cup. Horrifying.

I’m so freaking tired of being virtuous. Can’t eat this, can’t buy that, can’t watch that because of something horrible. I just wanna watch some soccer. Argentina/Saudi match this morning was great soccer even if I didn’t like the outcome. Anytime MBS is happy, I am unhappy.

Most of the International Peoplehood of the Woke just found about the working conditions in Qatar that have been going on for years, unto years. Let the IPW wallow in their bleating nonsense while they celebrate their national day or mourning on Thanksgiving because the English settlers in what became the United States killed far more people -- whether indigenous, enslaved, or indentured -- in building the United States.

Nothing like some good whataboutism to deflect from the issue at hand.

US-England will play to a tedious 0-0 tie, book it.

Just an impression, but it seems that all the major players, regardless of country, are African. Sort of like the contestants in the New York marathon.

African men go through very painful maturation rituals that increase their capacity to endure pain That is why they are so good at marathons and also at soccer/football which requires long periods of running that inflict a good deal of pain.

I’m sorry, what? Do you know a lot of African men?

Yes, and I am an anthropologist who has studied male adulthood rituals. How about you?

This comment is ridiculous and racist. Please tell us which African players you deem to have reached the top of the sport via these "painful maturation rituals".

Honestly the people most critical of the Qatar WC seem to be Europeans, specifically northern and Western Europeans. It seems a little sour grapes at times + borderline anti-Islam/anti-Middle Eastern. I don’t see nearly as much handwringing criticism coming from the US media, probably flying under the radar here a bit because of how the World Cup is conflicting with the much more important (American) football, both pro and college. But when I see people screeching and screaming online about how bad this WC is, especially on the Reddit echo chambers, it usually seems to be Europeans.

Did not answer the question. Which African soccer players who are allegedly at the top of the sport have gone through this ritual? No one is talking about marathon runners. You claimed this was a soccer/football foundation. It sounds like blowing smoke

Europeans are very politically aware. Americans not so much. Europeans also love a good protest. Americans prefer to be oblivious.

Well, Europeans care about soccer and Americans don't, which is what this whole thread is about. The Qatar thing is just part of the soccer flopping WWE drama.

I guess you were not aware of the protests against the Vietnam war? Civil Rights demonstrations? Women's march against the orange man? Black Lives Matter movement?

When was the last time American protestors forced a government to resign?

A game in the most popular sport in the entire world.
Billions will be watching it around the world.

Meanwhile in the USA most people will not be watching. Life goes on. Nobody cares.

I certainly don't care, but I also don't care about football, basketball or any other sport.

When you consider the whole world plays soccer, like even Aruba has a team, it’s astonishing that the US could care less about it. Not saying it’s wrong or anything but you’d think it was slightly more popular than it is!! It’s called the beautiful game for a reason. The only country in the world that doesn’t recognize it as such is US which is pretty sad.

Not sure where you are posting from, but here in Mo Co, there is a huge amount of soccer every weekend, and the parks along Veirs Mill Road and Dewey Park, among other places. Highly organized. All immigrants, of course, but they're here in tot good old USA and I welcome them. So the response is, American so care about soccer, just not the sham that the World Cup has become, with all the attendant drama and scandals.

Because we have real sports here that have real hitting and they get up. In soccer they get trips by the air and they roll around for 5 minutes and then they hobble off only to be cured by some miracle and run back on the field.

WC soccer has the same sort of drama as WWE. I’m not into either but every once in awhile they have a good story to tell. My interest in other professional as well college sports has waned a lot over the years. The Olympics as well — I’ve even been to the Olympics. I played a sport for over 25 years and I can’t even get into watching that.

I’d rather watch paint dry than watch a soccer game. Watching and listening about W-L in WC is more interesting than watching a game. To each their own.

LOL. It’s true. There’s some action in one area while the rest of the field takes an oxygen break. (Those players are in great shape but in a game they have a lot of passive playtime, which makes it more like baseball. They have to be ready for action at any time but action may be limited for long stretches for many positions.)

Will women be allowed outside to celebrate?

Of course. They'll probably join the Saudi Arbian women's teams who do very well in competition. Soccer is the number 1 sport for girls and women in SA.

You need be less antediluvian.

This was a new word for me so thank you, sincerely! (Not any PP)
