I know the far-right Christian Taliban think Halloween is a satanic holiday and try to cancel it.

All of the blame for this falls squarely on the shoulders of the Christian extremists in this County. 100%.

Are you too truly that clueless? Its often Hispanic families who opt out.

Anddddddd they are the Christian extremists. That title doesn’t only belong to whites. I was the pp who posted in the early pages. I’m Hispanic. In Spanish there is a nickname for this group and it’s legalistas. It was awful growing up like that and I don’t think the schools should cancel traditional celebrations to cater to extremist groups.

I am not White, not Christian and not Hispanic. I come from a totally different culture and we also have religious fanatics that work hard to ‘cancel’ what they disagree with.

I feel that the liberal progressives in this County have their own form of quasi-religious extremism where they actively work to push their values on everyone else.

I agree. Halloween is not religious. It’s a cultural tradition like Valentine’s Day. When we cancel routine celebrations that have occurred for decades to cater to a religious group, then the school is choosing to prioritize religion. And as someone who thinks religion is made up BS, I don’t think my kids should have to make sacrifices for others religious beliefs. The burden of following religious beliefs should fall on that family and they can take their kids out of school that day if it’s such a big deal to them. Maybe the parade can be the last 2 hours of the day on a Friday so it’s just an early pickup and not middle of the day.

If there are logistical challenges such as too many parents coming to watch then just live stream it like they did during COVID. But no sorry, I don’t feel the need to change any of our traditions to cater to the people who believe in made up woo.

It is a religious issue for some. I don’t get people like you. You can take your kids out to celebrate.

Abortion is a religious issue for some.

My point is those defending schools doing away with it since it’s a religious issue for some and insensitive to ignore that fact are probably the same people who think it’s outrageous that religious zealots overturned Roe.

You can’t have it both ways imho.

We are supposed to tolerate religious freedom—not use religion to infringe upon others.

I want schools to practice what they preach and be inclusive. It is not so much religion but cultural. Are you really not aware to wha the objection/issue is? It has nothing to do with extremists.

This isn't pushing values on anyone else. MCPS screams being inclusive and yet, the same folks who aren't getting the issue, what their religious holidays followed. This has nothing to do with Christianity. NOTHING. It has to do with cultural practices and schools with high populations of Hispanic families often opt out. Schools can do a fall festival and be inclusive. The same families who are screaming for Halloween and their kids being accepted are the same ones who are least respectful to others practices.

Halloween is not a real holiday so you can celebrate it on your time. The liberal progressives who preach inclusivity should at least understand this and be culturally sensitive.

I think this is where we’ll have to respectfully disagree because we don’t see eye to eye on it. It has everything to do with extreme forms of Christianity. The vast majority of Hispanics who are not zealots celebrate Halloween. Heck, there’s even a whole November 1 day dedicated to it. It has a lot to do with these Hispanic families being extreme far right zealots.

I’ll put it to you this way. Even celebrating Easter with eggs and an Easter bunny was unChristian like.

I don’t wanna be accused of sock puppeting so I’ll tell you I’m the previous two comments. Dances are also sinful so watch out for homecoming and prom.

Are you suggesting it’s a cultural issue for immigrants in our public schools and we should accommodate their disdain for our cultural activity?

Holidays are for celebrating with your family and community, not with school.

Are you always such a selfish a-hole?? Judgmental?? Me me me! We’ll guess what nasty ass, it’s not all about you anymore. Religious freedom.

Religious freedom means you are free to practice and observe your religious beliefs. The rest of us do not have to follow your beliefs and thinking activities should be canceled if they’re not in line with your religious beliefs is the ultimate in selfishness so it’s quite ironic you called me selfish when you want everyone to accommodate you.

First of all, you're ignorant. No questions asked. You're a POS. Second of all, each school district in the United States has 180 days of school- districts can freely choose which days to take off within those mandated days. Why does it bother you if a student gets a day off for a Jewish holiday rather than a random Tuesday in April? You're the problem. I'd take a good look in the mirror. You won't like what you see.

Umm what. My comment was in response to the ridiculousness of canceling Halloween celebrations because they conflict with someone’s religious beliefs. Do you read before you respond?

So you have no problem with literally hundreds of kids missing out instead of 4-6? Weird.

Kids can celebrate Halloween at home. I'd prefer to be inclusive and practice what adults preach vs. having it all just for show. Really, kids don't care if they have a party and cupcakes.

LOL Do you even know any kids?

Yes, and I was the room parent who always ended up doing 99% of the work. Most parents want to complain but they cannot bother sending in food or even showing up.

So it's really about your experience being the parent volunteer. Another parent who thinks childhood fun is about them.

I was volunteer for Halloween parties and also Valentines Day parties (and also field trips). Was it a lot of work? Yes. Was it worth it? Yes -- because the kids had a lot of fun.

If you don't want to do the chore then don't sign up. But don't ruin it for everyone else just because you didn't get anything out of it. It's not about YOU. It's about the kids.

Have the Halloween celebration at school and you'll get 95+% interest/participation. That seems inclusive to me.

4-6 kids out of 16-20 is not good participation. And, given some families, don't participate it is not inclusive. You want inclusive as long as it includes your beliefs and culture, just not others.

it's OUR culture. Or are you saying there is no American culture? Because we all come from various parts of the world and bring various cultures with us. If we can't agree 100% then we have -- no culture?

Yes, American culture is about my beliefs and my culture. That should go for everyone living in America. This is OUR culture.

Is this about you or the kids? Who cares if you did 99% of the work. That's your job as room parent.

+1 Plus it's voluntary. No one forced you.

I cared when I had to pay for it when rich families like you couldn't be bothered.

DP
We are low income. I paid out of my own pocket for a lot of crap for Halloween. I ended up donating black, orange and brown streamers to the classroom for the next year. Quityerb/tchin.
