Actually, it comes down to a matter of taste and sophistication, us DC residents really aren't likely to have much interest in a conversation with adults who choose suburbs over city when given the choice. Families who choose city life for their kids are usually more tolerant, international, adventuresome and forgiving than families who want the homogenous style of MD/VA life and a safe carpool to our great private schools. To the families who just can't afford to live in DC but wish to and find MD and VA 2nd choice, don't be offended! I speak to the superior-minded suburbanites who wouldn't want to ever live in DC.

And where were you born and raised? You are a hoot, but I think you protest just a leeetle too much. Sounds like you've got a lot to prove.

Signed,
Third generation DC'r, now happily living in MoCo in historic home with family, and managing to get along with folks from DC, MD and VA.

PRIVATE SCHOOL VOUCHERS!!! That used to be a hot button policy issue. What happened to that debate? Is it dead in the water? Is there any hope down the road?

Because private school vouchers = public money going to religious schools in most cases. A great many people, including some on the Supreme Court, hopefully have a problem with that.

Another issue that you might not be aware of is that school systems throughout the country who have implemented a voucher system are not moving kids into quality schools via the voucher system. As a whole, schools who accept vouchers are parochial schools that are a small step or 2 above the schools that have been deemed failing. The mid to high quality private schools will never be part of a voucher system.

I would say the opposite. MD had its day and is now on a slow gradual decline. Virginia is the new hub for jobs, technology, population growth, etc.

BUMP!

Most relevant thread ever.

Yeah, just re-read it and it kind of is.

What makes it so relevant now?

Because they are afraid their DC kids won't get in to private schools and the suburban kids are a nice scapegoat.

No. It's because we're tired of you guys using our resources and not paying for them.

The only DC privates that appear to have the most suburban kids are STA, Gonzaga, and NCS. Are you all complaining about close in Bethesda and CC also? St Johns also has MD burbs but I don't think the crowd on DCUM complains.

What resources? Parking ? A booth at Chipotle on Wisconsin Ave? A spot on a roster?

All of the DC privates have a heavy suburban population.

In terms of resources, that belongs in the OT or Political forum. Let's not go there, here.

No it belongs on this thread. The resources include (but are not limited to): police, fire, roads, parking etc. Since none of these institutions pay taxes they are getting these tax free, also didn't DC issue a bond for STA's construction?

As a born and bread DCer, product and parent of local privates, I say its idiotic for people to complain about MD and VA students coming in to dc for private school. Anybody who says otherwise is a pathetic whiner.

On the other hand, I do so see some merit to the argument about people from Md and Va coming for employment and failing to support our government with a commuter tax. You do use up huge resources and don't contribute any thing.
