So allll the shows that focus on issues of interest to people who aren’t white heterosexuals are not good, is that what you are saying pp?

DP; no no one is saying that. But you have to admit, sometimes the “diversity” feels REALLY forced in and unrealistic. Trans people are like .1% of the whole population but every show seems to have a trans or non-binary character? Why?

+1

I remember back in the 70s-90s, they wrote characters who were diverse. Now they write diverse characters who simply exist for being diverse. It’s noticeable and too on the nose.

There is no replacing the collective societal engagement of 70’s/80’s miniseries events (think Roots, The Thorn Birds, The Day After) and we are worse off for it.

Star Wars was better when it was more a cult thing. I’m so tired of “nerd culture” being so dominant. Stop it with the superheroes. The Kevin McCarthy’s of the world need to go away.

LOL — Star Wars was never a cult thing. The first movie was one of the first ever blockbusters, and it was rereleased 4 times between 1978 and 1982.

There was a time after Return of the Jedi and before the prequels where you were kinda a dork if you were into Star Wars. Especially as a girl (which I am). Now it’s so mainstream, multifaceted, and a hugely dominant IP. My unpopular opinion is it was better when it was smaller, less mainstream, and still inherently dorky.

I am wracking my brain to figure out when Star Wars *wasn't mainstream* and can't think of any time, ever. For as long as I can remember action figures, Star Wars Legos, etc. have been ubiquitous. Hell, Mel Brooks made a parody movie of it. Are you sure you know what "mainstream" means?

Yes.

All evidence to the contrary.

I agree, but in a good way. They seem so much happier and freer. Crazy they've only made a handful of public appearances since 2019, but the way the tabloids talk about them nonstop you'd think they were everywhere all the time all at once.

I wish Kathy Griffin would cohost NYE with Anderson again. Andy Cohen has made it unwatcheable.

JLo can’t sing or act. All her songs have backup voices.

Yep. And The Cosby Show is still one of the best television shows ever made. Same with Roseanne.

Actors don't really act, they are just being themselves. If you see the same actor enough times in movies, their personality comes through.

I find all the 'focusing on telling female stories' boring.

I'm almost 60 and maintain that most of the TV shows from the 1970s and 1980s are almost unwatchable today. Watch an episode of the Cosby show. Wooden acting, drab dialogue, paint by number story lines and pacing that puts you to sleep.
TV series have moved to streaming and the quality is 10 times better.

His SIL Jenny McCarthy should be cancelled for her antivax lies.

The majority of protagonists in film and tv are still male.

Then you are watching the wrong movies.

Husband and I try to give most of the trendy popular shows (and movies) a chance and they are all just so awful. Like painfully bad. Last show I think we laughed at was maybe Modern Family and The Office? But even those get really over the top with the diversity, dumb white guy tropes, and other nonsense shoved down your throat. Outside of live sports every once in a while, our TV is rarely on.
