What’s classy for rich people but trashy for poor people?

I think in the middle we want to have a neat and tidy house that’s not full of stuff “just in case” and a ton of collections, so the space is more valuable than the stuff. We don’t have a huge space for collections or a trash filled yard.

This reminds me of Candy Spelling. She has a whole room for Christmas decorations, a whole room for wrapping presents, etc. She comes off as very trashy.

+1

That house is/was horrible! Definitely a case of overcompensation.

More than 3 = Always, always trashy. Always.

Not when they all attend private schools, summer camps, and ivies on a single income or no discernible form of income and are called Chip or Trip.

yeah, I agree, except for the names, those are a few decades out now.

Names being "out" is not relevant/does not factor.

um, sure it does because "classy" names become "trashy" names the next generation. you don't know that?

C'mon, I have seen trashy people with those names - you can't hide trashy.

And the big families are usually getting financial aid - subsidized by the other students.

Chip or Trip are always white trash.

I know both and they are very old money. Own multiple homes, private school, etc.

It was very fashionable to have 4 kids growing up in my husbands wealthy neighborhood. And then to hire help in raising them. I can think of a few Chips and Trips right off the top of my head.

Ew.

My WASP aunt loves to talk about how tacky it is to have more than two kids. We are not farmyard animals!

yeah she sounds poor.

She has a valid point.

That 2 people could have the same thing (a job, a car, whatever) and if that person was rich, it was classy or indicative of wealth and worldliness, but if they were poor, it was trashy or indicative of lower class. (In the eyes of general society/ NOT in my own eyes! Just to clarify!)

Ones that come to mind for me:

Speaking a second language at home

Owning horses

Having 4 kids

Working at non-profit/charity work
Bad teeth!
Rambling big old house needing repair
Being disshelved
Bring eccentric -*this is a big one, it's okay to be a bit crazy when you're rich/old money
apparently but not if you're poor
Stay at home parent - if you are poor you are lazy but it you're rich it's perfectly acceptable

Doing non-profit or charity work is never trashy.

Maybe we can add “acting like white trash” to the list.

No, that’s a tautology.

Correct. This is the only one that seems insulting.

I'm not sure if anyone brought this up yet, but Mad Magazine had this covered perfectly decades ago. It cracks me up every time, particularly the one about the local eccentric.
