about to bid on a house - sex offender nearby - WWYD?

Anonymous
Found a great house and want to put on a contract soon; like, tomorrow. While doing some research online tonight, found two registered sex offenders nearby. One in the development (2 streets over) and the other a few streets over. These are single family homes in a nice area; and of course I can learn the names, addresses, etc. of these two people.

Who has been in this situation? What impact did this have on your home choice?
It's not ideal to have a registered sex offender nearby, but everything else of this home is great... just wanted get some feedback from people who have navigated this before.

Thanks.

OP here.
The house is nearby a high school and middle school; I wonder about the proximity about these two sex offenders to the schools.... I guess I can look up the guidelines online, but if anyone has more information - thanks.

How do you know the information you have is accurate? Many websites that promise that information are not correct.

This info is from the Virginia State Dept of Corrections, so I assume it's accurate.

It wouldn't deter me from buying a house unless the sex offenders were pedophiles and lived next door or within a couple of houses. Frankly, I'm more worried about the molesters who've never been caught.

Are they pedophiles? If not, don't worry.

They are in every neighborhood, so there isn't much you can do other than be vigilant.

OP here is both of the registrants are for taking indecent liberties with minors, so, yes, pedophiles.

. That could just be statutory rape. Try to research more and then make sure your kid doesn't interact with them.

They are everywhere. Everywhere. Type in any address and you'll find a handful.

OP,

Here's the real deal. We had two in our neighborhood. One moved after his brother sold the home.

We knew to avoid those two homes and to warn our kids to be vigilant.

However, you know these creeps were around when we were kids, but b/c the internet wasn't our best friend, we had not access to addresses and the type of crimes they committed.

So rather than live your life in fear, move in and deal. The guy on the metro with whom you're sharing a seat could be a sexual offender. But that's not a deterrent from using public transportation if you really want to see an exhibit downtown.

There are 2 in my neighborhood. Neither seems to ever be outside. Everyone knows who they are, so people watch. I keep tabs on my kids. It has never been a problem. Frankly, there are plenty of offenders who have never been caught, so you can never really know. I agree with the PP who said that you will find them near any address. It wouldn't deter me. I just like having the information so I can be cautious.

I have the offender locator app, they are everywhere! Really, not to scare you, but they can be in any neighborhood. I live in silver spring and they are all over, we checked it in Cleveland park at my parents and they were everywhere around there too so it really doesn't matter.

I am another poster who agrees that they are everywhere. I doubt you will find a neighborhood without one. In our neighborhood, they tend to keep to themselves, mainly because people know. I rarely see them even leave the house. As long as you a parent who informs their child, and supervises their child during outdoor play, then you should really not have a problem.

could be statutory rape of someone a couple years younger than they were at the time. That doesn't make it right, but it's definitely less of an issue where I'm concerned. My parents could have pressed charges against the 21-year-old who was my first boyfriend when I was 17 years old. Thankfully, they didn't!

Sex offenders are everywhere. You'll have a hard time finding a house that doesn't have at least one registered offender living nearby. I have a daughter, so believe me, I'm cautious about who might be living near us. There were a few in our previous zip code. I didn't really give it much thought. I have enough other stuff to worry about.
