I was thinking of getting a dog. I am quite allergic to dogs, but have found a few breeds that might be better for people with allergies.
Of those, I think I'm interesting in a Soft Haired Wheaten Terrier...but want to get close to/pet one first, rub my eyes, etc...see if I have a reaction. I don't want to get a dog first and then see that I had a reaction to it.....that wouldn't be fair to the dog. I would prefer a pure bred one, over a mutt...some mutts aren't as hypoallergenic. If you are willing to let me pet your dog or hang out with it for less than a 1/2 hour, please let me know. If there's interest, I can post my email. Thanks!! |
| I think your best bet is to find a local breader for them and ask to come and spend some time with their dogs. If you don't have any reactions you can get one of their dogs. |

OP here...
I'd rather rescue a dog, than buy one... But thanks for your suggestion. |
| Why don't you visit/pet one through a rescue organization? That way you could potentially meet the dog and proceed to adopt it if you weren't allergic. |
The suggestion was to visit a breeder, not to buy a dog. OP, just VISIT. |

OP, your best bet is a breeder. I don't know anyone that would allow a stranger posting on an online forum into their home to pet their dog.
Also, finding a pure bred Wheaten at the pound is highly unlikely....it's just an uncommon breed and not usually mass produced in puppy mills so their owners are more likely got them from good breaders and won't be giving them up to the pound. If you can find a rescue organization that would be another option. |

OP again...
BTW, I wouldn't want to go into some stranger's home either...I would have planned to meet in a common/public place. I wasn't thinking the pound, but rather a Wheaten rescue league. The suggestion was to visit and "if you don't have any reactions you can get one of their dogs."...if you want to be exact. Thanks anyway...this all gives me some insight. |
| If you were thinking of going to a Wheaten rescue - then why don't you contact one - they would probably let you meet a foster dog... |
| We had a Wheaten for many years because my husband has allergies. We went to a dog show to see one before we got her. |

Wheatenterrierrescue.org
They have a local coordinator who has adopted several wheatens- contact them and I'm sure they would help you. Fantastic organization (and a sweet sweet breed- quite high energy!) |
they look pretty cute but kind snippy, bitey. Aren't terriers kind of bitey dogs to have around children? |
| OP, do not get a terrier if you have small children, or, if you do get a Westy because they are the best of the terriers. |
| I've only known two, but neither were dogs I would want around kids and I own a large dog with a toddler. Both dogs were snippy. |
| I have a Standard Poodle. Both my husband and son are allergic to dogs and neither has a reaction to our big boy. |

op, i'm very allergic to dogs. of course i didn't really confirm this until after we got one. but our breed is "hypoallergenic"... a mini schnauzer.
so generally i'm ok living in the same house with the dog, and laying where the dog has laid, but i can't pet him without immediately needing to wash my hands otherwise get some rash bumps on my wrists and forearms, and if i touch my face it's game over. so i rarely pet him. just sharing this because it might be the same for you. just because they're less allergenic doesn't mean they're truly hypoallergenic. that's what all the websites and experts will say too. |
