My sister has a soft-coated Wheaten and it is the most wonderful dog in the world, as are the other ones I've known (there is a difference between the Soft-coated Wheatens and the others I believe). Not snippy, and very low-maintenance. She doesn't live around here, otherwise I'd invite you to meet her. Don't tell my dog - a goldendoodle - but I like my sister's Wheaten better.

OP, I have a Portuguese Water Dog and looked at Wheatens too.
I would not mind you coming over to my house at all to see what a Portie is like (if you are interested in them). When I was trying to find my Portie (and I knew I wanted one for many reasons, including the non-shedding), breeders were more than happy to let me visit first. As some have mentioned on this thread, if you get in touch with a good breeder - and it might be tricky, I don't know how common they are here - they will welcome you to hang out with their dogs before they will even let you commit to getting one. Serious breeders are not out there (just) to make money - they love the breed and want to find the best families they can. I was surprised by how many people refused me as a first-time dog owner for a Portie! But I now know why.... |
| I had a Wheaton growing up. What an awesome dog! We had 6 kids in our house and that dog had the patience of a saint! |
| Hmmm. Portie. Do you call Portugese people "porties" too? No I'm really just asking. |
| 22:21- get a grip. It's a DOG, we're not starting the anti-portugese movement here. Ever heard of a west highland terrior being called a westie? or a Newfoundland being called a Newfie? Same thing as the portugese water dog being called a Porti. THere is not grand plan to slight the entire population of Portugal. |
