UVA alum. here, currently living across the river in MoCo. It has been a while since my UVa undergrad days, but was wondering if UVa still has top draw for Virginia and Montgomery County students/parents. Is its reputation still high, or has it slipped below all the usual suspects (Chapel Hill/UMich/Duke/Wash U (I hear a lot of kids going to Wash U of St. Louis)? And, what is UVa's reputation viz. William & Mary?
By "reputation" I mean selectivity and reputation with employers. Has anybody moved across the river from MoCo to Fairfax, et al., just to get the tuition benefits, and lived to regret it? |
UVA is a top draw for FCPS, but the kids with the best chance to get in went to Thomas Jefferson. Admission is very selective, as is W & M.
A friend of mine who works in HR says she prefers the attitude of non-UVa grads, as those who went there have cocky attitudes and think they are better than anyone else. Those are her words, not mine, based on her experience interviewing a lot of recent grads for positions at a top acctg firm. |
Not too high for Montgomery/Howard/frederick counties. Much more likely to go UMD for hard sciences (most noble winners in ACC) gov/politics/journalism (home to most pulitzer prize winners in ACC) Business (considering grads invented Google/underarmour/Nautica/ outback steakhouse ect..). Would consider Uva for english or law but would prefer Georgetown. |
OP -- UVA is the second ranked public university in America next to UC Berkeley according to US News + World Report. It is really hard to get into especially if you are out-of-state. I know a lot of top kids from No VA who couldn't get into UVA as UVA has to admit lesser qualfied kids from the rest of the state. |
12:48 is, I would wager, the same poster who has presented lots of info to convince DCUMers that U of Md. is superior to UVa. Keep it coming, 12:48. People, please tell your kids to apply to Maryland instead of Virginia. Getting admitted to UVa is already a bear. |
The Big Ten is pursuing UMD to join due to excellence in hard sciences/journalism-political science/computer sciences (see google)/business. No interest in UVa. UMD when merged with Baltimore professional campus will double yearly research funding to 1.1 billion dwarfing all other ACC schools, none of which has over 400 million per year. Thats why Umd has the most pulitzer/academy award/nobel graduates of any institution in the ACC. UVa would be great for english or law however. |
looks like UMD booster is back in full swing...it's not even close in rankings to UVA...sorry folks. |
Hey, I think I work with this poster! (Just as annoying in real life....) |
Hey, I think I work with this poster! (Just as annoying in real life....)
Ha, I thought DH worked with that annoying poster/UMD grad -- precisely the reason my DH practically forbade DS from applying to UMD (DS declined to apply after several street fights/police brutality incidents were in the news). |
Actually, Charlottesville has 6 times the violent crime as college park. (google it, unless it bothers u to use another UMD grads invention). |
30 graduates from our competitive FC high school will go to UVA, 0 to UMD. TJ will send 100+ to UVA and 0 to UMD. Send your kids to UMD, that won't bother us a bit. |
UMD has passed UVa in the world university rankings. UMD 40 national championship teams to Uva 20. Ncaa championships in basketball (men and women) /football, the 3 most difficult UVa zero. UMD has 200 ACC championships dwarfing Uva. UMD has more Pulitzer prize alumni and faculty than Uva. UMD has more Nobel prize alumni and faculty than Uva. UMD dwarfs Uva in annual research funding. UMd alumni created/invented the following.... google, the muppets, seinfeld, the miniature insulin pump, coronary stents, The Wire, The Boondocks, broke Watergate, the hybrid engine, The universal price code, the octane system, the automatic parachute, retractable landing gear, pulse doppler radar, linear programming, launched sirius satellite, founded nautica and Outback Steakhouse, Designed the first large screen stadium television, created frequent flyer programs, syndicated Baywatch, wrote Apollo 13....
Uva alumni have not matched any of these creative achievements many of which our culture depends on. They do perform a mean real estate settlement however. |
So basically, what you are saying is... go to Umd for the hard courses that create amazing results and wealth for our country, and go to Uva for english and law? |
just havin fun...UVa is a great school! |
No UVa experience, but I went to Cal (UC Berkeley), and I can tell you that I had ONE friend from out-of-state. He had been accepted at every single Ivy League except Princeton. That should give you a sense of just how hard it is to get into top public schools for out of staters. |
