I'm an atheist and I'm not angry and miserable. Nor was I when I was a believer. Believers, especially in Christianity, assume that you should have the same beliefs as they do. Doesn't that seem strange to you? |
Don't atheists assume the same thing? |
Trump is NOT an atheist. https://www.cnn.com/2015/07/18/politics/trump-has-never-sought-forgiveness/index.html “People are so shocked when they find … out I am Protestant. I am Presbyterian. And I go to church and I love God and I love my church” “When I drink my little wine – which is about the only wine I drink – and have my little cracker, I guess that is a form of asking for forgiveness, and I do that as often as possible because I feel cleansed,” he said. “I think in terms of ‘let’s go on and let’s make it right.’” At his second inauguration: https://www.whitehouse.gov/remarks/2025/01/the-inaugural-address/ “But I felt then and believe even more so now that my life was saved for a reason. I was saved by God to make America great again.” This past week: https://apnews.com/article/trump-texas-floods-fema-phase-out-b77d9681d2d39f8c201351b54ecf944f “ “They were there because they loved God. And, as we grieve this unthinkable tragedy, we take comfort in the knowledge that God has welcomed those little beautiful girls into his comforting arms in heaven,” Trump said.” |
You mean…share facts? |
No, I know there are millions of idiots in this country and a large # of them believe in ancient fairy tales. |
Exactly. |
Pp asked a question for which they have not yet received an answer. |
You can take as many personal shots as you like. I don't think any atheists here are angry, except maybe about one thing: How you believers often won't answer simple questions. I am not saying your beliefs are wrong. I am asking how you justify them since there seems to be no significant evidence for them. If you take that as "trying" to "prove you wrong", well, that's your issue. This is a discussion forum, after all, and if you're not prepared to discuss things, maybe you should not participate in discussion? I would encourage you to grow up and if you are going to engage be prepared to explain your religious beliefs the same way you might with someone who disagreed with you on any other topic on DCUM. Gardening, colleges, investing, health, and yes, politics. |
Okay. How would you talk about college with someone who didn’t believe that a college education existed? Someone who thinks that people pay a lot of money and go to college for four years in order to maintain some kind of social standing and to be accepted into their families who might otherwise shun them, or at least be very disappointed and bring it up frequently. That the families are upset not because they care about their family member and believe they would benefit from a college education, but because they have been brainwashed into thinking a college education is real. However, this person tells you, there isn’t actually anything that is real or valuable happening at colleges or universities. Their main function is in brainwashing the people who attend into thinking they have some kind of value, and anyone with any kind of critical thinking skills could see that higher education is a sham. How would you respond to these people? And what if every thread on the college board was overrun by them? |
Many non-believers do believe that believers are "wrong"...hence the use of terms like "idiots", "sheep", etc. etc. to describe them, as well as terms like "sky fairies" to poke fun at someone's beliefs. Don't ask believers to "grow up", when non-believers are also exhibiting childish behavior that you apparently don't like. The justification is Faith. Period. Either you accept that, or you don't. |
I’m quoting myself again just to say that anyone who has gone to college and is looking at spending a lot of time and money to send their kids to college has thought about these questions. These questions aren’t new or radical or without merit. They have been asked for hundreds of years. And if someone grappling with these things asked the questions, it would be and often is an interesting discussion. However, the person asking them here is not open minded or genuinely looking for a discussion. They are 100% sure they have the correct answer. |
I don't accept that. I did, for a long time. I had religious faith too. Then I thought about it, very seriously, and studied it, as I have studied many subjects. I realized that I really wanted to go to heaven and live forever. And eventually, I realized that heaven made no sense. |
My belief brings me peace and comfort in scary situations, serenity in health crises, courage when I sm scared.
I don't expect heaven or hell. I hope my husband and I and our late pets will somehow be together. That hope is comforting when thinking of DH dying before me. I doubt I will find out I am wrong. |
That's fine. You do you. Let others do theirs. |
So what. Your personal opinion is just that. Other people have different journeys. Some convert to Christianity after a life of disbelief. |
