Junie B. Jones - special needs??

Anonymous
We read couple of these books recently and now are listening to the CDs .... is the character of Junie B supposed to be special needs like Aspergers, ADHD, something else?

The way she talks and her vocabulary ard really young for a Kindergarten kid (and yes I have spent times with plenty of them to know) and her actions seem more like a toddler or preschool child. My DD who is 7 actually asked "what's wrong with Junie B? ... she talks so weird! .... and why can't she know the teacher's name?"

DD has read several of those books. Junie B is not special needs, but there is a boy character who I think is supposed to be Asperger's-like. He is often throwing in non-sequiturs, the kids think he i a bit off, etc. I do find her vocabulary problematic. I think she is supposed to be talking like a little kid, but my 5 year old does not talk like that, and gets confused by the made up words.

Probably the all-time stupidest post on DCUM.

agree

It's like analyzing the Flintstones to find evidence of adult humor.

who cares? Your kid is reading.

I like the books. I think the character is funny in a quirky sort of way.

Asperger's? OP has too much time on her hands.

the worst books, thankfully my kids hate them too.

Why is this a dumb post? I don't know these books; my kids are too young, but I would love to see a heroine of popular kids books with special needs and the author doesn't make a big deal of it. Like on "Breaking Bad," the writers don't make a big deal of the fact that the main character's son has cerebral palsy. He just does. This is exactly how special needs should be presented.

book banner, I suppose?

How can you stand a fire all year long?

interesting. I had a kindergarten class who was obsessed with JBJ one year, and I used to read chapters to them during our daily "quiet time". I didn't notice anything odd about them then...I guess I'll have to go back and look.

Interviews with the author indicate she is just trying to get the sound/tone of a kindergartner. I personally don't like the books because I think they just promote snarky, self-absorbed kids. But I do know kids love them maybe because adults like myself have such reactions.

Is Junie B. Jones Talking Trash?

By ANNA JANE GROSSMAN
AT her all-day princess-theme party for her graduation from preschool, Lyra Alvis had her face painted, went first down the water slide and was even allowed to eat the flower on the cake. “It was the best day of my life,” said Lyra, 5, who lives in Nashville.

At least until bedtime. That is when her father, Lance Alvis, did something he’d never done before: Midway through a book that was a gift from a friend, he insisted she pick out something different to read.

“But I love this book,” Lyra said.

The paperback in question was about Junie B. Jones, the hero of a popular Random House early reading series that has divided parents since it was introduced 15 years ago. With more than 43 million copies in print and a stage show touring the country, the series has its share of die-hard fans and is required summer reading at many elementary schools.

But more than a few parents have taken issue with Junie B., as she is called. Their disagreement is a pint-size version of the lingering education battle between advocates of phonics, who believe children should be taught proper spelling and grammar from the outset, and those who favor whole language, a literacy method that accepts misspellings and other errors as long as children are engaged in reading and writing.

Junie B is. one of these series that people either love or hate. I think the character is just supposed to sound intentionally immature because some kids find that funny. Nothing to do with special needs.

Worse than the books... Junie B. Jones, the play! OMG! It was awful and while it was just an hour long, it was way too long, and didn't engage the kids.

OP, if you think that special needs is a little bit of babyish talking and not wanting to ride the stinky, smelly school bus then there's a lot you need to learn. Your post is insulting to special needs children and their families.

Junie B is "quirky" in a spunky, spirited way, not quirky like she has Aspergers.

She calls her Kingergarten teacher "Mrs." because that's the way she rolls, that's all.

I find the books enjoyable to read aloud, unlike those vapid Magic Treehouse books.
