DC 2-year-old class with birthday cutoff after October 15

We just found out we will be living in DC starting in late summer, and are scrambling to find a two-year-old preschool class for our daughter for this fall. She won't turn two until October, and it seems like most places have firm birthday cutoffs before this. She is mature for her age so I don't want to put her in a daycare-type setting with younger kids. She doesn't need to go full time, just a couple of half days a week. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

My daughter will not be two until late November and is starting a pre-school program in the fall that has a December 30th cut off (only for that classroom). However, it is in Annandale. Let me know if you would like the details...not sure if they are still accepting but you never know!

how is a 20 month old "mature for her age?" I have three kids and I'm scratching my head at this.

Depending where in DC you would be looking, many of the preschools (especially in NWDC/Chevy Chase) are already filled for the upcoming fall, so you would be lucky to get a slot for any 2 year old, let alone a place at one of the schools that allows later birthday cut-offs. You might want to consider preschools that have a January start date for toddlers that miss the September cut-off. I know Adas Israel in Cleveland Park has this, I'm sure other programs do as well but no specific names come to mind. You could also look into the DC coop programs as well (just do a search for coops on this forum).

OP here... I guess "mature" wasn't the right word, given that she finds it hysterically funny to stick her fingers up people's noses and still enjoys putting yogurt in her hair, but she has always been well ahead on milestones and social and language development and ends up playing with older kids at the playground. So I don't want to wait a year and have her be almost three in a two year old class, or put her in a one-year-old daycare type setting this year. Thank you for the Adas Israel suggestion; I did look at the DC parks and rec coops (this is what you meant, right?) but only the one in Columbia Heights would take kids with her birthday, and it is full. I think Annandale would be too far. Would welcome any further suggestions!

Welcome to DCUM and over thinking things. She isn't "mature" she is actually quite normal and is drawn to older children...like 99.99999% of all children. She probably isn't gifted, destined to be of greatness or "the love of your life" (you probably will have more). She may be quite mundane actually which is so nice in this culture.

Just go with it -- upon many fronts. Your child will thank you down the road.

Well, that was patronizing, and not really helpful... I don't want to get into an argument, am just looking for suggestions on schools. Other parents (including a developmental psychologist) have commented on their surprise at her age based on her speech and social skills, which are similar to the 2 1/2 year olds in a structured play group that she goes to. I don't see her as "destined to be of greatness," just want her to be in a setting where she will be happy, challenged, and not bored. I was "gifted" and very bored in school, and don't want the same for her.

You took her to a developmental psychologist?

Of course you were "gifted."

She is normal. She is not yet 2. She is not "gifted." Need I say more?

Washington Hebrew (Mass and Macomb) - has a midyear class for kids who turn two between August and December - doesn't start til January - but 2 mornings a week. We aren't Jewish and many of our friends who sent their children there weren't either - the class itself was very mixed with religious/non-religious background - and was great for our child who also had an October birthday. I'd really recommend looking into it....There are also some of the mommy and me playgroups that many of my friends with fall birthday kids have been happy with - Little Graces, etc...

Thanks, was wondering about Washington Hebrew; it seems like they and Adas Israel have similar programs for kids in that age group... and did not know about Little Graces. October birthdays are tough!!

Think a few years forward about how you will handle her pre-K year if she already did a pre-K program because you started her on a path with older kids who will attend K before she will.. Maybe you will do a private K that will accept her early or maybe she will do a Jr K..which is fine. Just think about it..

She didn't say she took her to a DP, but maybe one of her friends was a DP. Sheesh. Why is everyone so damn bitchy today.

I'm bumping this to see if anyone has any additional suggestions. Thanks!

Franklin Montessori (at Van Ness stop) is flexible with birthdays. My son's 2's class has kids who had a Nov birthday. Also, they had a few 2s start in January.

Mi Palacio is also a Spanish immersion in Takoma DC, located in Trinity Episcopal Church (though not affiliated). We've been very happy with the care there.

The director, Marisol Espinosa, is out of the country for a family emergency until the end of January, but the main phone number is (202)-723-0088.

I know there is an infant waiting list, but I'm not sure how long the wait is for a spot.

Good luck!
