DC 2-year-old class with birthday cutoff after October 15

I think all of the Montessori schools in the Metro Montessori group (Broad Branch, Franklin and Apple) follow this rule. My DC has a November birthday and started in the 2s class at one of them at the beginning of the January semester. One of the benefits of DC versus Montgomery County is that your DC can move to primary the next fall at less than 3. Montgomery County has a pretty firm age cutoff, I think around September 30, for the older classroom.

She probably isn't gifted, destined to be of greatness or "the love of your life" (you probably will have more). She may be quite mundane actually which is so nice in this culture.

Just go with it -- upon many fronts. Your child will thank you down the road.

Well, that was patronizing, and not really helpful... I don't want to get into an argument, am just looking for suggestions on schools. Other parents (including a developmental psychologist) have commented on their surprise at her age based on her speech and social skills, which are similar to the 2 1/2 year olds in a structured play group that she goes to. I don't see her as "destined to be of greatness," just want her to be in a setting where she will be happy, challenged, and not bored. I was "gifted" and very bored in school, and don't want the same for her.

I am with you, OP. I have a kid with a late October birthday and it was hard finding what you were looking for and I had the exact same concerns as you. The PP is being ridiculous and obviously has no experience with the late October birthday situation. We live in McLean and found a Moms Morning Out program that had kids with the similar situation.

The JCC in DC will take children once they turn 2 years of age, whether that's October or November.

If you're looking for full-day care, a lot of daycares have preschool programs where your child will be with same or similarly-aged kids. My daughter has a late October birthday and I had similar concerns as you. She's in a preschool class with other kids who will go to kindergarten in the same year; they're all within a few months of her age, though yes, she is one of the older kids. It hasn't held her back, I don't think. Before this, she was in a large daycare where the preschool programming started at about age 2. Look for something like that!

Aiden Montessori has a toddler class for this age. I believe CCBC also has classes for this age.

Rockville Community Nursery School has a class for the younger 2s, birthdays before the end of January. http://rcnscoop.org/wp/about/class-offerings/parentchild-class

It has a really warm, nurturing teacher who focuses on art, music, and child development. We had a great experience with that class with our extra-social/verbal-for-her-age DD a few years ago.
