Infants, Toddlers, & Preschoolers
| At night - I'm wondering because our ds is starting to stay up later & later - bedtime now is 8:30pm, but he doesn't want to go to sleep after until 9pm, which I think is too late for a small child. And it's too long of an evening for both of us tired parents, after a long day. Would love to hear what other parents are doing....thanks! |

No naps - bath at 7:00 and bed at 7:30. I feel for you - those evenings can get so long and just suck the joy out of your day.

| My three year old DS is also staying up later with the longer days. He's up with the sunrise (ugh! ) and no matter how tired he is, doesn't usually get to bed before 8... and 8:30 is pretty typical these days. During the winter he often was asleep by 7:30. My 18 month DS is the same... up later this summer. |
| We still do naps, and our DD goes to bed at 8pm but falls asleep closer to 9pm. When the nap is skipped, she is by 7:45pm and asleep by 8pm. |
| When my son was 3 he didn't need much sleep and he got naps at daycare. On weekdays he never went to sleep before 11 pm and was up with me at 6:40 am every morning. Fortunately, on the weekends, he would sleep in with me until 8 am. To save my sanity, I made a no talking rule starting at 9 pm. And, I relaxed my standards on TV. I still monitored channels, but from 9 pm to 11 pm, he had my blessing to watch whenever he wanted. |

A three year old up until 11 watching tv?
When my son was 3, he did not nap. Bedtime was a strict 8:00. He would sleep until 730 or 800. Sleep does beget sleep and it really is important for children at this age to get 11-12 hours if at all possible. |

If my 3.5 year old DD naps at daycare (about a 60-90 minute nap), she is awake until 9:30/10 pm (although she is in her room by 8:30 and allowed to look at books until she falls asleep). She sleeps until 7:30/8:00am
If she doesn't nap (my preference), she is asleep around 8 and easily sleeps until 8am the next day. |

My 3 year old naps at least 2 hours in the afternoon and is in bed asleep by 8 and doesn't get up until about 7:30 in the morning.
She has always been an amazing sleeper. Eating is a totally different story! |
You are pretty judgmental and self-righteous. Get a grip. To OP, my son goes to bed at 10:00 p.m., up at 7:45 for preschool. Has a 2 hour nap. (good enough for you, pp?) |
| I guess may be I am, but I really think 11 for a 3 year old is nuts. Sorry, I just do. I have talked to many teachers who say they practically beg parents to get their kids to bed by 730 or 8. I realize some situations may make that impossible, but if not, I agree that should be the goal. |
| my three year old was staying up until 11 too until i stopped his naps. he was taking 2.5 - 3 hour naps and then only sleeping 7-8 hours at night. he's now in bed by 7:30 or 8:00. he used to drop off to sleep immediately when he didn't nap but now he seems to be staying up for awhile still which is concerning me. i think he should have 11 hours + sleep and lately he's been waking up after only 10. |
teachers??? at 3? begging the parents to put their kids to sleep earlier? you're funny! Interesting that you judge other parents and when they put their kids to sleep. But then you have your child in "school" at three. |
| A three year old up to 11 pm watching TV. You're right it's funny. |
| We always tried to have our kids asleep by 8:15 at the latest-even with naps. We have a neighbor whose child naps and then will not drop off until 11:00 at night. I cannot imagine dealing with my child that late at night. If that is what works for you, I guess that's fine, but you could not pay me to walk in your shoes... |

DD is 3.5 and is in this wierd nap transition phase which dictates the time she falls asleep.
Days when she has a nap (2-3 hours in afternoon) she is in bed by 8:30-9:00 but not asleep until about 9:30-10:00 (lots of talking to herself). Days when she doesn't have a nap she's in bed by 8:00 and asleep by 8:30 but terribly crabby! In other words it's been hard to stick to a schedule because of the irregular napping. When do kids drop naps all together? |
