I've recently started seeing Dr. Stillman and SGFC. Just wondering is any of you have TTC experience with him and what you think.
Thanks! |
We went to Dr. Stillman - he helped us have our son (and we went on to have another child w. Shady Grove as well), so I will always be in his debt - I didn't care for his bedside manner, esp when we had follow up appointments and I had many follow up questions, but he got the job done & that's what's most important! You end up seeing many different Dr's at Shady Grove, and they all meet & discuss each case, and I really think it's the best in town - so you're in great hands. Good luck - hard to go through but all worth it!

HE HAS TO BE THE RUDEST DOCTOR I HAVE EVER COME IN CONTACT WITH. Not worth it. Other doctors can help you conceive. |
Do you mind if I ask why he was so rude? Did you end up seeing any other docs at SGFC? |
I got pregnant with the help of Dr. Chang at Shady Grove. Also not the warmest guy, but not rude like Stillman (had to deal with Stillman if Chang wasn't there.) I recommend Chang or Dr. Osborne...
Honestly, though, in terms of personality, it is really your nurse that makes a big difference--that is who you have the most contact with, she will call you with daily results, & you ask her the questions. (Don't forget to get your nurse's email address-that was invaluable to me)...The docs determine your protocol & do the main procedures... good luck Oh & there is a Maryland board under the ivfconnections forums where you can post shady grove questions & find local cycle buddies... |
I was told to avoid Stillman at all costs. But when I made my appointment, he was the only one available (that tells you something). Anyway, I said to myself, it could not be that bad, I needed to get in.
Well, when I went, he basically told me that he didn't understand why at my age I wanted another child, that it was crazy, that I would never get pregnant because I was too old. Then he pulled out some statistics to show me that my odds were slim, as if I did not get online and see the same data myself. He was just as my colleague had told me. I tried to switch doctors within the practice, which he would not allow. Point: don't start with him, because you can't get away. Anyway, I avoided that place for 3 months because of his behavior. Then, I just went down the street to someone else, and was pregnant right away. |
I'm one of the previous posters about Dr. Stillman - I also saw Dr. Osborne who was really nice - she's mainly in DC now I think - also a Dr. who's name I can't remember but that had Green in is (Greenhouse maybe?) - he was very nice. Again, day to day you see all of the different Dr's so you can ask them questions at your monitoring appointments. |
Keep in mind, if you did not conceive, you would not be so complementary. When you have a poor outcome with a not so nice doctor, it makes everything worse. |
I wish I had seen this post before I made my first appointment at SG, how can I change to another RE? |
I did several cycles with Dr. Stillman and ultimately did not have success due to my age. I had a great experience with him and think highly of him - despite my outcome (I did get preg, but unfortunately m/c). While I can understand why some don't care for his approach (it never bothered me in the slightest), he really genuinely cares for his patients - he went above and beyond for me on several occassions and I will always be appreciative. He also really knows his stuff, so if you can get past the personality, then you should be set. You also will rarely see Dr. Stillman during a cycle. There are 4 REs in the Rockville office and, in all of my cycles, I can probably count on one hand the number of times he did my monitoring. I saw the other docs much more frequently. Also, don't be afraid to speak up to him if you don't like something. He is human and does respond when you let him know there is an issue. |
Dr. Stillman helped us have our DD and I did not find his bedside manner abrasive at all. In fact, I found him to be one of the most personable of Rockville's REs.
|
Agree with 19:48 poster. Dr. Stillman is one of the most personable REs in the Rockville office! He's not a hand holder, but I wouldn't call him abrasive, either. |
I can see both sides... my initial impression of him was that he was very arrogant. Actually, I still think that he is pretty arrogant. But after a failed cycle, I came in with some questions, based on the research literature, and he was very respectful, told me that these were great questions, listened, and we changed my protocol based on a collaborative discussion. That upped my respect for him. I did feel listened to.
In full disclosure, I did get pregnant that cycle, and I agree that that colors one's feelings about the place/doctor. It's easier to deal with the annoyances when the outcome is positive. Wishing you much luck and a quick positive! |
greenhouse and widra are great - stillman is a gruff, egomaniac, he thinks he knows everything and doesn't
when i was 31, he was incredibly dismissive b/c of our age, said give it more time. To make a long story short he failed to look at an xray from a prior HSG done at sibley by my ob (it showed i couldn't carry a baby). So instead i di 4 IUIs, and 4 IVF's until he decided i should do another HSG (3 years later!) and guess, what? he realized that i couldn't carry a baby - we went directly to a gestational carrier and now have our daughter! had he not dismissed me b/c of my age, he would have reviewed the HSG the first time around and spared us over 100K in cost, not to mention the emotional and physical toll of 3 mc, that i will never get over. Go to someone who is bright and compassionate and who will listed to their patients. good luck. |
Try Greenhouse, he is the most dedicated RE I've ever met and unfortunately I've met a lot of them. |
