Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS)
| Anyone know? Just curious. |

My theory is that they essentially get a two-fer: They get to count it as a day of school for the kids (totally not) and they also give the teachers a day to pack up and clean up.
I wish they would end on a Friday at a regular hour and stop pretending to give my child a full 180 days of education. I would understand if snow days required us to go until a Tues. or a Wed., but that' not what happens. Their master plan calls for a short Mon. and a waste of time Tues. every year. Oh Well. We have to take what we get. In the future, I won't tell DH that we can't travel this week b/c the kids have school and I won't think twice about setting them up with a camp (instead of going to the last two days of school) if it fits our needs. |
| 1.5 hrs of the 2.5 hr day is 6th grade graduation, which the other kids all have to sit through. (at least at our school) |
Yuck. That's boring! |
| Oru FCPS does not require kids to sit through the 6th grade graduation... I would consider that a poor use of time. The kids would get more out of scrubbing the desks in their own classroom, IMO. |
| I mean "Our." |
| The 6th grade graduation is a lot more interesting to the kids .... the 6th graders certainly look forward to it. The 5th graders are excited to be on their way there, etc on down the line ... don't trash ceremonies about milestones with your peers - that is actually a nice "community-oriented" thing for a school to do. |
| kindergarteners, first and second graders who don't know anyone in 6th grade don't need to be sitting in an hour and a half assembly watching people they don't know. I can understand 5th graders going, but it's expecting too much from 300 kids in 2nd grade and under. It's not a memory moment for them. I'm glad my kids aren't doing that today. |
No, Grasshopper. It's a big yawn. |
| Our school's 6th grade graduation was yesterday. I expect they are watching a movie, cleaning their desks, the classroom and helping the teacher pack up today. |
At least they are learning about cleaning up and helping someone out.
|
| Our first grader spent an hour and a half at an assembly watching kids 2nd grade and up getting certificates of achievement and awards (none for kids 1st grade and under), then 30 minutes watching Finding Nemo. What a waste. |
What would be the point of a full day? No one is learning anything that day, and the kids are a little out of control. A half-day gives enough time for kids to say bye to each other, but doesn't make the teachers have to manage their classrooms all day long. It just avoids issues. All sorts of things can happen on the last day when kids just don't care anymore. |

My child watched a movie and that was basically it.
Oh, and she watched a movie on Monday and had a class picnic. |
I don't think it is necessary to have a full day (I'm the OP), but I fail to see the point of going for two-and-a-half hours. That's a lot of money spent on transportation for nothing. And honestly, they've spent the last week doing end-of-year stuff and not doing any learning. |
