Flat belly after 10 years but stretch marks and linea nigra--can I wear a bikini?

Anonymous
I used to have a decent bod. After college I slowly started gaining weight, and by age 25 I definitely could not pull off a bikini. At 32 I got pregnant with twins, gained 70 pounds, and by their first birthday I had only lost 40. That was 18 months ago, and since then I have worked my ass off, dieted religiously, toned up and lost 50 lbs. My belly is flatter than it's been in 10 years and I am dying to wear a bikini again. I've been wearing the mom-tankini or sheer-cutout-one-piece for too long. Only problem is that I've got some pretty bad (slowly fading) stretch marks and the remainder of a linea nigra. I'm proud to have carried 2 kids and I don't mind the marks, but I don't want to gross anyone out either. So I'm wondering--if I've got the belly to pull of the bikini, are the stretch marks and linea nigra a dealbreaker?

I would wear stretch marks on my face in exchange for a flat belly. Wear your bikini. Good for you on your successful weight loss.

Yes, go ahead. You could have worn it at 25 as well.

Of course you can! If you feel good it in, then by all means wear the bikini.
I have stretch marks on my breasts, calves and thighs. I don't wear shorts and long sleeve shirts to the pool. If they offend people then that's their problem.
Rock the bikini!

I wouldn't, but that is just because I'm really self conscious. I don't look at others and judge them as harshly as I judge myself. If I saw you in a bikini, I'd probably think "Damn, you go girl!"

Nope.

No one looks good in a bikini. It doesn't matter how thin you are. Have some decency, there is no need to walk around in your bra and panties.

Congratulations on your weight loss.

This poster says this whenever anyone mentions a bikini! So funny. I would say go for it because I wore a bikini with my faded stretch marks until recently. But I just had abdominal surgery and I have a prominent scar. So now I'm thinking no more bikinis for me It's going to be hard to say goodbye to my beloved pink bikini...

Maybe I am being overly self-conscious but I don't think I can do it anymore. So I guess it depends on how bad the marks are.

I think plenty of people look great in bikinis! My teenagers look adorable in their bikinis! And I think I rocked the hell out of a bikini in high school, college, and in my 20s/early 30s.

I am the same weight now that I was back then. And I am a marathon runner, so I am in fantastic shape. But I am also 45 years old. And I think they look ridiculous on women over about 40 no matter how great the bod.

Yes. Signed, a triathlete who also doesn't wear bikinis at 44.

I think this is kind of sad. I don't see why they would look ridiculous on anyone who has a good body. My bikini days are over but I would wear them over 40 if I could.

personally, i dont' care for bikinis. but i think the one pieces that they make now with cutouts and interesting shapes and whatnot are really cool. wear one of those!

I think that many women would look better in a bikini than these horrific tankinis that they keep sporting. The tankini accentuates the fat on your belly...it looks horrible

Well some of us gain weight in our thighs and butt, and bikinis at least draw attention to the better part of our anatomy. I have a giganto hysterectomy scar and plan on wearing a bikini. I am also my pre-baby weight. So yeah OP - rock it!

And have some of you BEEN to the beach? Let's just say that many, many people will be there who are rocking their oversized bods without a care in the world. And there will be many an overweight hairy man in a speedo. So if you don't like seeing people's bodies uncovered, then YOU SHOULDN'T GO TO THE BEACH. But don't dissuade those of us with the self confidence to parade around our bodies, flaws and all! (I also think you should do some research on celebrity/magazine photo re-touches to realize how famous people actually look, which is very similar to the rest of the human population.) I recently saw an 85 yo woman in a bikini, and I was like, you go grandma! More of us should be less concerned about what others think.

You bet I'll be wearing a bikini for another 10 years, at least. My only concession is that I bought a skirt bottom so I can run after my toddler without worrying about a wedgie. Damn I am one classy dame!

Thanks, this encourages me. I am the PP with the brand new scar and maybe when it fades I'll put my pink bikini on again.
