I just got news from the dr's office that my blood tests numbers to confirm/date pg were really low - 58. The blood test was done yesterday and I should/would have gottn pd today. So yesterday I was 3wks and 6 days from LMP. They are having the dr's call me back.
I am a little freaked out right now with what I read online. Anyone have really low numbers and everything was fine? |
I didn't go through this personally but this article indicates those numbers are normal and that hcg numbers in general shouldn't be take too seriously:

Here's a good website:
http://www.betabase.info ...however, the site appears to be down right now. As far as I can recall 58 seems like an okay # for 4 weeks since LMP. You need to have it drawn again in a couple of days for a comparison - if the #'s have doubled, that's a good sign. |
I once had initial low hcg #-and miscarried 3 days later. I've heard other stories where the # starts off low and the pregnancy is fine. You need to have a second hcg-it should have doubled in 48-72 hours. |
Hi,
The most important thing is that the numbers keep going up. Since they're doubling all the time, it's hard to be exact. (Also, are you sure about all your dates?) Overall the numbers are pretty accurate if your dates are right (I used them my first pg to figure out I had twins before I even had my first u/s) but there are all sorts of exceptions. My second pg, my doctor thought mine were too low, but I think I was just a few days off on my dates. And my best friend had dramatically low numbers for both her pregnancies and now she's the mom of two perfect boys. Hang in there! Good luck to you!!! |
Dumb related question - I recently had a pregnancy confirmed at the OB but they didn't do a blood test. Is that normal? I thought the last time around that was the first thing they did. They did do an ultra sound, so I have more than the pee-on-a-stick test to rely on... and I was thinking that maybe they wait till 8 weeks for the blood?? But since I've had complications I wish there was someone checking HcG or other issues. |
My hcg levels were low at first for my first pregnancy and everything turned out fine. According to the American Pregnancy Association, your numbers are perfectly normal:
http://www.americanpregnancy.org/duringpregnancy/hcglevels.html Make sure your dr retests you every 48 hours for two additional reads to make sure they are doubling. Good luck! |
My hcg was 59 at 13 days past ovulation (3 weeks, 4 days from lmp). Two days later it was at 180. Knowing when you ovulated is more important than lmp. I wouldn't worry about it sounds like you don't know when you ovulated and, more importantly, what matters is that the numbers rise. Good luck! |
op here. Thanks for all of the reponses. The dr had me come in this morning for another blood test just as pp's said. I have to call in on Monday to get the results. My dr said not to worry that we probably just tested really early. I used ovulation tests, so I told her when I think I ovulated and she thinks it's just early.
Thanks for all of the encouragement. I am just trying to take it easy this weekend (hard with a toddler running around). To pp that asked about not doing a blood test. With my 2yo DD the same dr did not do a blood test and just had me come in at 8 weeks. I did have an u/s at 7wks due to a little spotting, but they saw the heartbeat which made me feel much better. I asked the nurse why they didn't do a blood test last time and she said they used to just have you come in at 8 wks, but now do the blood test on everyone that calls saying they are pregnant to check the hormone levels and monitor the pg much earlier. My dr also just got a new sono machine, so they said at the 8 wk appt they will do a sono in the office to check for the heartbeat. Again, thanks for all of the kind words. |
in both of my pg my numbers were in the 20s when I came in. They doubled and I proceeded to have normal pregnancies. Good luck ![]() |
my beta hcg was 16.9 on 13DPO ... yes, you read that right. but they doubled normally and i'm now almost 8 weeks pg and heard a nice strong heartbeat on ultrasound. don't put much stock in one number, but you should look to make sure your numbers double every 48-72 hours. congratulations on your pregnancy! |
My HcG numbers were never checked during my pregnancy, so yes, this is normal. I would guess different offices just have different protocols. |
My HCG was 45 at 3 weeks 6 days since my LMP (and 1 week, 6 days since ovluation- had an IUI). I was too ignorant at the time to know that was low. But my doctor did not seem too concerned, and now I am 28 weeks pregnant! I think the doubling time is what is most important- 3 days after my first result, my HCG was 210. |
OP here - I heard back from the dr's office this afternoon that my beta hCG taken 2 days later (this past Fri) came back as 141. I thought this would be really good news since I thought if the no. doubled within 48 hours it was good. I got a voicemail from the dr late this afternon regarding the results - he just said the numbers aren't sky-rocketing like he would like him to see, so he wants me to go back for another hCG test this Thursday. I don't know much about the beta hCG numbers and I'm a little confused everything I've read online. Anybody have any advice on my numbers? |
I don't know all the details, but if the numbers are going up , but not normally, it could be due to an ectopic pregnancy. Not trying to freak you out, just wanted to let you know . Good luck! |
