To be fair, the ability to rack up close to 9 figures of debt is impressive. Most people couldn't get lenders to extend credit for even a fraction of that |
Of course they think that. The classism and utter privilege these folks exhibit is disgusting! Theyâd rather pay out the wazoo to send their kids to a Wild West traveling salesman that have their kids mix with the âpoorsâ (who may not actually be poor). Wilson High has a hell of a lot of problems, but teachers are getting paid and not fleeing en masse (any more than any other school these days, anyway). But itâs not shiny and âinnovativeâ Whittle parents wanted a disruptor and by god they got one! |
| I just finished Inventing Anna on Netflix and thought about Whittle a lot. |

But itâs not shiny and âinnovativeâ Whittle parents wanted a disruptor and by god they got one! I think thatâs a misread. My belief is that most of the Whittle students were from families who wanted something better from their kids but did not have the money to send to a major private. Whittle discounted tuition dramatically making it an option - and maybe the only affordable option - for lots of families. This was not the typical DCUM family that neurotically applied to 28 schools trying to convince others that St. Bullshit was really a Big 3. Said differently, there are lots of people who donât obsess over which school is the prettiest handbag that the can flex at their next cocktail party. That doesnât mean they deserve to get screwed by a schemer or that they donât love their children. |

>>Given the huge gaps in learning the Whittle students have faced this year, especially because of subpar or unqualified teachers, a lack of learning resources, etc., I would not be surprised if most of them have to repeat a year when they transfer.
But they are IB school. How can this be? They have X Day and Acceleration Block. And Lozenge Piano designed the stairwells. And the viewbook was printed on 50lb paper and given to me in canvas bag. What you say is pack of lies. |

To this poster "Ask your own kids, do they think it's the right thing to help the Whittle kids out? If they don't say yes, you've got some cold, uncaring children.
I'm sure if you were in that situation, you wouldn't want to upend their lives when we're just a few months till the end of the semester. Show some compassion." Sigh. The issue of compassion is irrelevant. Whittle School is (was) a for-profit business. Just like BASIS McLean, FUSION, British International School of Washington and many others. A domain with .org or .edu or the word "school" in a name is NOT the same as 501(c)3 nonprofit status. It's a parent's responsibility to understand the implications of sending their child to a for-profit business to be educated. This was not a public charter school startup. Attending Whittle was a commercial choice, not a human right. All children in America have to right to a free and appropriate education. That is why we have public and charter (in DC) schools that are regulated and funded publicly. Appropriate does not mean ideal or "innovative." Simply put, appropriate means a child is able to learn along with their peers. Even if parents choose to opt out of the public system, their children will always be allowed to return. It's their right. Not just an option. In today's DC, Chris Whittle would NEVER receive a public charter. He wouldn't be able to pass the finance and governance criteria because of his very public past in DC. The only way he could operate a school was as a for-profit business. While I would never wish disruption on any child's education, I think parents who made a perhaps naive or ill-informed choice (we've all done it) need to suck it up and move on. Think of it as a life lesson in preparedness and resilience. Just like every other parent on the planet right now. Next time, caveat emptor |
Meanwhile, CW is insisting that even thought he doesn't have $52,524.55 to pay this contractor, he is HIGHLY confident he can rustle up hundreds of millions to buy the building... It would be a comedy were it not for all the constituencies so badly impacted by his egomaniacal ridiculousness.. Apart from trying to stave off personal bankruptcy, what exactly is CW's end game here? |
|
The end game for CW is the game. He loves it. He is addicted to risk.
Here is the âinterestingâ thing about him - he truly believes he has not lied to anyone. He is a sociopath. |
| My favorite part is that, when it all comes crashing down in a few months, CW will try to paint himself as a victim. "I tried to hard to raise the money for our school, but THEY didn't believe." Will take zero responsibility for mismanaging it into the ground. |
Exactly what I thought. Stringing people along, telling them the money is coming. |
