Best part time jobs for mom leaving good paying job?

Anonymous
I'm thinking of dumping my job in the fall for something part time so I can stay home more with my DD who will be in kindergarten. Any suggestions for job sites to begin my search? Hard to fathom going from $120K a year to $10 per hour so hoping for a good job with decent pay. Marketing/Events/ and or proj mgt. TIA for any thoughts you have.

Why would you leave a good paying job when your child is starting K? It seems like something you would've done years ago. Don't do it.

Have you talked with your employer about going part-time or doing some contract work? That's a much better bet than searching on job sites.

There are very few well paid part time jobs available in this region. I spent a long time looking for one, and have had to accept a job that pays $20 an hour. As the PP said, ask to go part time or get some contract work.

why do people have to answer with "THIS"? what is the point?

OP - I looked a long time, finally found a admin position that paid $20 per hour. Used to make $50 per hour full time.

good luck

The only good paying part-time jobs are for folks who downsized their current job or consult, usually with former clients. An overstatement, yes, but barely one.

This is true. I have worked pat time in my current role and at 24hrs a week, I can make 105k/yr. I'm now FT, but can flip back and forth as business dictates. However, no one could walk off the street and get my set up. I know the product, customer, and industry like the back of my hand. I have a special arrangement.

If I were to hop out of the workforce, and try to get back in PT, I woild guess my best bet would be lunches at a busy restaurant. I know the people that work lunch at Gordon Bierch in Tysoons can make up to $100 at lunch, which pans out to around $20 hour and a good workout!

OP here, thanks for everyone's replies. I have only been in my current job 1 year and am not really into it. Previous company 7 years and before that 7 years somewhere else. I supervise people so I can't imagine I can ask for fewer hours. I am willing to take a different job for less pay so the stress level will go down. Perhaps I'll check with my previous employers for a part time position.

To a few of you asking why I would do this now, I was thinking of working part time to get my daughter when school is over, work on reading/ writing and I'm sure all the afterschool activities that will be around the corner.

I agree that a child IN school can be just as much work as a pre-K child. After all- "school" is only 6 hrs, minus transit. It's not a lot of time! Add in a trip or two for shopping - it's time for pick up already.

I am trying to transition back to the workforce now that DS in in school but it's difficult. My mind is always elsewhere. I go to DS's public school class a lot (1st gr) and it doesn't look like a lot of learning is going on there- mostly socialization skills. I put a lot into reading and other skills at home. Plus having the energy to cook and clean - it's a lot! When children are in school, they must be in bed by 7 or 7:30, and ASLEEP by 8:30, to be up early enough to actually EAT breakfast, get themselves dressed w/out conflict, teeth brushed, etc.

I looked for 6 years for meaningful part-time work and found nothing. Good luck, OP.

How motivated were you?

what's with the snottiness here? Is it wrong to want to spend time with your child to help develop them into someone who contributes to society? I guess $$ is more important to some of you... not me.

8:54, do you do any paid work?

"How motivated were you?"

are you kidding? I had a part-time, at-home job that i took w/me after working in office for 12 years. I saw the end coming and I tried to get something in my field for YEARS. I had connections and nearly 20 yrs experience (15 at one single employer). I had 10-12 interviews over 6 years for GOOD jobs, in my field. Even for full-time work, hoping to strike a deal for part-time, after putting in some time. NO-THING. I have not had any substantial income since 2008. Yes, we live cheaply; yes it's worth it when I'm cooking/cleaning/working w/DS. But when I want a new pair of $$ shoes or weekend away? I feel pretty guilty about not having my own dough. I would love to have a part-time job that I could only work b/t 9 and 3 weekdays. Any of those out there? Let me know!
