New Ward 7 boundaries might encircle Eastern

Anonymous
I would find it quite interesting if this happens and I am not totally opposed but it would definite have political clout for Ward 7. Merely, because they would have secured two high-schools with both being either "newly" remodeled or rebuilt. Then Ward 7 would have in addition Friendship and Chavez Charter High Schools which would mean this Ward has went from one comprehensive high school to two-comprehensive and two charter high-schools. That would speak volumes for Gray, Brown and Alexander in re-election bid.

Considering Ward 6 is on the move to improve the middle-schools and then to have our lone Eastern High School being encircled by another Ward, brings on another set of Q's&A's.

I know the saying of "build it and they will come" but I wouldn't think that it now means "build it and they will just encircle-it for their Ward."

Finish this limerick, Jack and Jill went up the hill (Capitol) to go to Eastern High....

OP, any good news stories out there about this to share?

Ward boundaries and school boundaries have no relationship.

. I don't quite agree with this. Maybe they don't but they should. If I'm in boundary for ellioT-whine, then when and if I have problems at the school, I want to be able to discuss this with my councilman,Tommy wells, not someone I have no ability to vote in --or out. I'm already disenfranchised as a dc resident with regards to not voting representative at federal level and to continue this at the school level is pretty awful. (and yes, I have personally called on Tommy wells for his intervention on behalf of my ward 6 elementary sChool, so I know that using your council member for school issues is effective). If eastern goes to ward 7, then ward 6 schools should get it's own, new, ward 6 high school (van ness high, maybe?)

I recommend calling Phil Mendelson, Jack Evans, and Michael Brown to complain about this proposal. Eliot Hine and Eastern needs Tommy Wells to have a better chance of sucess. Phil Mendelson came to a community meeting and could not have been less compassionate if he tried. I felt more disenfranchised than I ever have before in this city. If this happens, and if it hurts EH and Eastern, I will never vote for PH or MB again.

Are the wealthy families on Capitol Hill actually going to send their kids to Eastern next year? I know that's the whole idea behind restarting the school, but is that actually happening?

We live in a different ward than our in-boundary school - it's not that uncommon in the other Wards. What's the big deal?

It is my understanding that Wards 1 and 5 do not have high schools. Why do the hill people think they should have one exclusively for ward 6. Just curious.

Well, I can't speak for the people of the hill, but for ME, I would say that it takes a ton of involvement and buy-in for a school that was underenrolled and under performing to get off the ground. Tommy Wells gets his constituents and has done a ton to support Maury, Brent and other Hill schools. He is supportive of Elliot Hine and Eastern, the Ward 7 city council person ignores the one ward 7 neighborhood west of the Anacostia now. We need as much help as we can get if Hine and Eastern are going to work. Wells can still help, but better if the schools are in his ward.

I don't think it's about Eastern being "exclusively" for ward 6 ... it's about keeping it (and Eliot-Hine) IN the political entity of ward 6. And at least based on the boundary maps, Eastern appears to already serve kids in other wards.

Columbia Heights Education Campus, formerly Bell Multicultural High School and Lincoln Multicultural Middle School, is in Ward 1. McKinley Technology High School and Dunbar High School are in Ward 5.

I'm the poster that suggested Ward 6 should get "it's own" high school if it loses eastern. I didn't mean to Suggest that only ward six residents would be allowed to attend, just that each and every ward should have at least one "neighborhood" high school. Put anouther way, every council member should have one high school that he or she is responsive to.

Ward 5 doesn't have a middle school (they converted our schools to ed campuses that go through 8th). Ward 5 does have assigned high school(s). I live in Ward 5 and my assigned high school is Roosevelt, which is not in this Ward. McKinley is not a Ward 5 school; it's an application-only District-wide high school.

Anyway I say all this to show it's not unusual to have high school assignments cross Ward boundaries. I'm not sure that the District has enough DCPS students to have comprehensive high schools (in addition to the app-only high schools and the charter schools) in each Ward.

[/quoteI DON'T know about Bell, but McKinley is open to every ward resident. The students must compete to enter like Walls and Banneker

Okay give McKinley back to Ward 5 because Ward 5 is without both middle and high schools. That is why the vast majority of children residing in ward 5 are either charter or private school bound.

Actually, it's the other way around. The MS and HS options in Ward 5 were so bad that it gave charters a real foothold. And that only accelerated the closure of some really awful Ward 5 schools.
