Georgetown OBs what if the one you are extremely uncomfortable with...

Anonymous
is the one who ends up on call on the day you deliver? This is my 3rd pregnancy so I have seen my fair share of bad, fair and good doctors but my experience today with Steven Maynard was the most horrific I have ever had... needless to say I scheduled my follow up with someone else. I don't feel comfortable with him at all anymore so what are the chances he will be the ONLY one there when I deliver. I only saw the attending for a few mins during pushing in my last preg. so I don't even remember her name. I just don't want to have to see him again I would like to stay at Georgetown b/c of previous complications during pregnancies.

This happened to me, except that the one I had a bad experience with was Breen. Sure enough, she was the one on call when I went into labor. It actually wasn't that bad - I was too busy having contractions to worry about her, and she was barely around anyway. And by the time I was ready to push, she was long gone and a new doctor was on call. All this to say, I remember being in your exact position and stressing about how awful it would be if I ever had to interact with her again, and in the end my worst fear turned out not to be a big deal at all. So try not to worry too much!

Thank you PP! OP here. I calmed down a little and I think you are right, it won't matter that much.

Breen is who I am seeing next... ugh hopefully I won't end up having bad experiences with everyone

don't worry about Maynard - he was on call when I went into labor AND DID NOT GET THERE IN TIME! The resident delivered me. The only thing I got from Maynard was a bill.

Seriously, I called GT when I went into labor at midnight. He called me back after I had arrived at the hospital so I did not get the message as I was putting on the hospital gown. By the time he made is sweet time to the room, my baby was in the hands of the resident.

Well, maybe you really didn't give Maynard much of a chance time-wise because you bombed through your labor or maybe the residents and nurses didn't call fast enough when you got there or maybe something else was going on. How do you know, really? It's really tough to judge when you only have one side to talk about...

I would call Dr. Landy (dept chair) and tell her your experience. Perhaps there is some kind of system where the back-up call person could deliver you.

Care to share your bad experience? Full disclosure - I saw Dr. Maynard for my entire pregnancy last time and loved him.

Had the same experience (diff practice, diff doctor) but was terrified this one guy would be on when I delivered and he was. It was FINE!! you will be distracted, there are plenty of others there, and some Docs are much better in a delivery setting than an office one.

I have a history of quick deliveries and communicated that when I left a message on-call.
When I arrived I asked if any one else was in active labor and the nurse said no it is quite.
Yes, my labor was quick - but not so quick that he could not have been there (Note I had delivered 20 minutes after arriving and in that situation the on-call dr was there so I do have a reference point)
At one point in my labor, there was some heart rate issues that the nurse / resident was dealing with - there was definitely some heightened concerns and people in the room was saying that they had called the OB on call and were calling again.

When he did arrive he looked like he had just rolled out of bed.

OK - that is my side and my experience.

Don't love Dr Wulf - not the warmest person during prenatal appts, and turned into a total bully when she was on-call during my labor (even my husband commented on it, so it wasn't just pregnant hormones speaking). Although she did end up doing my unplanned c/s, and did a great job, so I think she is a good clinician. I am now pregnant with #2, probably wouldn't choose to see her for prenatal appts, but would be just fine scheduling another c/s with her.

I also had some not-so-great experiences with Breen and Bowles-Johnson, but both of them seem to get good reviews here, so maybe I just happened to have caught them on a bad day. However, I would not choose to schedule an appt with either of them again.

Different OB practice, but my least favorite doc out of my practice, that I avoided for office visits, ended up delivering my DD. Didn't phase me by that point.

Same thing happened to me at GUH but with Dr. Bowles- Johnson. I had a horrible experience with her for an annual exam & prayed that she wasn't on-call when it was time to deliver my 2nd baby. Guess what? She was on call & ended up delivering my daughter. She was just as mean & nasty during L&D as during the exam. I even had an altercation with her during labor when she insisted on breaking my water at for no good reason at 3cm. She finally gave up & meekly said "fine it's your body anyway", but insisted that she would return later to break my water. Anyway, she delivered my daughter & everything was fine. But she's so cold, I just couldn't stand her.

all the Drs I had good communications with have gone. I stuck around as it was the closest hospital and I had quick deliveries. But now that I am done having kids, I am moving on.

The drs I really clicked with included drs Megan Bray (left in 05), John Buek (left in 07), Gorman (leaving in 11), Dr. Elizabeth N.... (left earlier this year).

Not sure if this is standard turnover for a practice or what the issues is.

OP here, wow!! I could totally see that happen to me... Maybe I'll just hide in the bathroom and have an unassisted birth all by myself Kidding of course, I am sure I will manage. It is my body after all.

Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences with me!
