Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS)
Gosh, I get a headache just reading this list. I hate FCPS and all of their boundary changes. |
At least the boundary change options are better than the what-were-they-on-when-they-dreamed-up-this non-boundary change.
|
| Yes, the non-boundary change is a little crazy IMO. The AAP changes will affect my family though, and not for the better. I'm hoping for #3... |
| The non-boundary change wasn't something FCPS Staff favored, but instead a recommendation of the advisory group composed largely of PTA representatives. The School Board directed the Staff to include one non-boundary option among those identified for further consideration so it could appear to be listening to the parents' group. It doesn't mean they'll adopt it. |
How would the WF families feel about being reassigned to Lake Braddock from both Frost/Woodson and Poe/Annandale under #3? That is one big school! |
Looks like it would be pretty good based on the data posted on the FCPS website. |
What would be pretty good? If I were a WFES/Poe/Annandale parent, I'd probably be happy about it. As a WFES/Frost/Woodson parent, I'm not. Among other things, it would mean a major reduction in our home values in one fell swoop. |
Option 3 would be pretty good as it (a) eliminates a split feeder, (b) makes enough of a change to address overcrowding for something longer than just the immediate future, (c) brings the Wakefield Forest kids back together with kids from their neighborhood, (d) makes wise use of space at an underused school (Lake Braddock) without causing overcrowding by the boundary change, and (e) moves more of the ES to K-6, to match the configuration of the majority of ES in Fairfax County. I think facilities staff did a great job preparing the three boundary options. |
Thanks for posting this. I'm shocked that this is one time that I actually agree with the School Board about the "it doesn't mean they'll adopt it" part.
|
| I am also a WFES/Frost/Woodson parent. I do not like Option 3. I have kids at both WFES and the Canterbury Woods AAP center. For my kids at Canterburry, most of their classmates will continue on to Frost/Woodson. My kids thought they would be able to go to Frost/Woodson with them. Option 3 creates a new problem we were never supposed to have. I don't see how moving my kids to Lake Braddock eliminates any overcrowding at Annandale. They were never supposed to go to Annandale. I chose to live where I do because of the current boundaries for the high schools. |

Option 2 does not work well due to the resulting overcrowding at Frost MS.
Option 2 2012-13 Capacity Utilization % Before: 117.4% After: 122.8 % 2016-17 Capacity Utilization % Before: 115.5% After: 122.9 % Option 3 2012-13 Capacity Utilization % Before: 117.4% After: 110.3 % 2016-17 Capacity Utilization % Before: 115.5% After: 109.8 % |
Yes, most FCPS parents do just that. http://www.fcps.edu/fts/planning/annandalestudy/regional/pdfs/faq.pdf Annandale High School is one of the most overcrowded high school, both in the region and in the county, with a current building utilization, including the 14 room modular installed this year, of 101% and which is projected to increase to 115% by the 2016-17 school year. Changes in the area’s demographics, housing, and economy, etc. are attributable to the rise in student enrollments. Much growth has occurred countywide, and with this, the need may arise to adjust some school boundaries so that schools can better serve their student populations. Understandably, school attendance area adjustments can be an emotional process, not just from families facing the possibility of changes to their school attendance areas, but from alumni who relocate to the area, and community members. The Annandale Regional Study aims to achieve the best possible outcome for students through more balanced enrollments and efficient student accommodation planning to meet the needs for existing and future students in the region. |
My guess is that the "unemotional" parents who purport to see this objectively and favor options #2 and 3 are WF parents zoned to Poe/Annandale who will see a nice boost in their property values if their children are reassigned to either Frost/Woodson or Lake Braddock. |
or maybe they're just interested in their kids going to a school that's not overcrowded |
