Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS)
| Agree that WF will enver leave AHS, but how can she fix the numbers to add more capacity at AHS? If there were more capacity, they wouldn't need to do the study.... can you explain? |
pp is likely referring to the newly reported capacity of 2350 which apparently includes permanent installation of modulars. As late as April, staff was reporting 2178 as the capacity. I think the fcps dashboard still has the 2178 value. |
| ok, I get it. that will certainly help chose option 1, and we'll be back here in a couple of years with a new boundary study. what a waste of time. |

Here is a quote from Tessie in the 3/9/2011 A-Blast "Tessie Wilson, the School Board member who represents the Braddock district, has coined a new term of what she wants to see happen from the redistricting, “balance diversity.” Wilson does not want to see the school become heavily balanced in one race or economic status, because she believes AHS thrives because of the diversity. “This is what the real world looks like,” Wilson said. “I understand the concern, but for lacrosse, there’s another 53% and their participation is every bit as valuable to me.”
Not sure what she means - a bit contradictory |
|
You forgot the rest of the quote "The study has provided the board with a better view of what AHS looks like in terms of participation, but Wilson is not that easily impressed. “It gives other kids the opportunity to come and try out, who wouldn’t have for a variety of reasons,” Wilson said. “[The study] really does bother me because it’s saying that some groups of kids are better than others.”
I happen to agree with her. All the concern about the middle class areas makes it seem like the school is nothing without them. |
This is the A-Blast article that was quoted: http://www.thea-blast.org/news/2011/03/09/study-shows-participation-problems/ In other words, Tessie was claiming that she didn't really care if 47% of the girl's lacrosse players came from neighborhoods viewed as most likely to be redistricted, because there are other students at the school who could fill the same slots. I'd take that with a grain of salt - it's precisely the type of argument Tessie would make to favor the Wakefield Forest parents who want to get redistricted to Woodson. Anyway, since Annandale itself was recently redistricted from the Braddock District to the Mason District, Sandy Evans, not Tessie, has more influence over the final outcome. |
Does this all really matter? The school is overcrowded. The author of the participation "study" cherry-picked about 10 or 11 extra-curricular activities that might be adversely impacted. How many activities are barely or not impacted at all? How many clubs? This is about educational capacity. The school is overcrowded. Let's fix that, then worry about how many lacrosse teams we can field. |
| Totally agree with PP, this should be about over crowding at AHS and educational capacity. But alas, nothing is that simple. The decision makers, such as Sandy, will fix over crowding only to the extent the middle class kids that fill up the extra curriculars stay at AHS. Too much work for the board to have to deal with a school that would be predominately comprised of lower income kids with lower scores etc. FCSD does not want that type of school in the county. |

School Board meeting today w/ an update on status - it's going to be Option 1.
Thank you everyone for playing. Thank you school board for not fixing anything. We'll see every one back here in two years when AHS is still overcrowded. |
According to the FCPS website, there's no news until the staff recommendation is presented to the School Board on June 23. Are you attending today's work session where something different has been announced? |
"Waw. I don't get rezoned to Woodson. Waw. Waw. I hope your stupid Annandale school gets overcrowded soon. Waw. Waw." |
| 14:01 --- what did the school board say? |
|
14:01- there's a lot of time between now and the final vote. Hold onto your horses until the final vote on July 28.
Also, it is stressed that the board does not have to adopt any one option as is. They can pick and choose "a la carte" to their hearts desire. |
