Yes, it is very much about SES. I am a wealthy black person who lives in Howard County. Honestly, I really do not care about the race or ethnicity the students are at my children's school. However, I do care about them attending schools with other wealthy and UMC families. Only white liberals twist themselves into a pretzel over the diversity BS. The wealthy minorities in my social circle choose high performing schools rather they are public or private for their children. I know it is not PC to mentioned this on DCUM, but the fact of the matter is that schools with high concentrations of FARM students are not the best learning environments. Often times they are violent, the children come from dysfunctional homes, academics are dismal, and there is a culture of low expectations. Embracing dysfunction and pacifying poor choices is all the norm in those schools. Who wants their children to be expose to a destructive learning environment just to give naïve social justice warriors a thrill?

This blogger is just an extremist who wants attention and to stir the pot. I am not shedding a tear about what he wrote and his social engineering views. When I encounter folks like him, I tell myself, "Oh look at the holier than thou, know it all Marxist." I sigh and keep it moving. Believe me when I say this wealthy blacks, Asians, and Latinos are not loosing sleep about rubbing shoulders with lower class people. We do not feel guilty about working hard, residing in safe neighborhoods, or sending our children to high performing schools. So why white folks on DCUM are debating with each other about who is and who is not a racist because certain families do not want their children around poor people, us wealthy minorities find these folks quite peculiar. It is beyond ridiculous for anyone to feel guilty about sending their children to high performing schools!

I love it when people who have no experience with schools with higher FARMs rates opine on these schools.

Wealthy white liberal here, who sends my kids to schools with higher FARMS rates. Why? Because there is a cohort of high performing college bound kids with them. I care about diversity about as much as you do, because let's face it, my kids are in classes with mostly other affluent kids and most of them are white. We wanted to live close in a progressive, crunchy area. Howard County is suburban hell and would have been a horrible commute for DC jobs (and we didn't move to the DC area so we could work in some crappy company in the burbs so please don't tell me "not everyone works in DC!") and we wanted to spend less than a million on a home so where we are.

Look, I get it. You moved far the hell out and your ass is glued to your car and your pissed about it and you have to justify it by saying well we need good schools and we can't afford to live closer in. It's a hard thing to admit. My kids are getting a great education and they aren't exposed to the violence or classroom disruptions that you seem to know about.

If you don't like the assumptions I made about you, then don't make assumptions about schools you know nothing about, in a county you don't live in, Wealthy Black Person from Howard County.

PP here. Agree with everything you said. I'm black as well and have no problem sending my kids to good schools. We are considering a move to HoCo. It's far cheaper in HoCo than where we currently live so will be looking for the best schools there and good neighborhoods without going too far west. Columbia doesn't look like it has much going on so we are checking out Ellicott City.

Real estate value in Columbia has been trending down so smart to avoid. Not sure about Ellicott City.
