the Key/ASFS building switch...

Plenty of us think the swap is sensible.

The 841 is bullsh1t. Way more space at Key.

They should just close down Lincoln St. between I-66 and the last houses before 14th St. and merge the Hayes Park and ASFS properties into a larger school campus.

The likelihood of the county and school board playing nice on something like this is close to zero, but it could be a big help for APS.

They should just close Rocky Run Park and build a school there. Capacity problems solved. Think before you speak.

Seriously, if removing Key preference and making ASFS neighborhood is happening, swap is logical, most likely retaining existing boundaries s

Why don't you also go ahead and tell us more about how the Buck property would make an awesome elementary swing space.

No need to use Buck for an elementary school, but if APS had Hayes Park, they could use more of the ASFS property for buildings/trailers and use the Hayes Park property for outdoor space. Closing Lincoln St. makes it easier to use the entire property.

Actually, move Hayes to Buck property, then merge ASFS and Hayes site.

Is there precedent for APS usurping parks? I can't see this sitting well with those who live near there.

Yeah, that's happening because budgets are so fat right now.

I have already written to APS commending them on recognizing the need to move Immersion and encouraging them to think bigger and move it to another location entirely, possibly Carlin Springs. I'm assuming that's what the first poster in this string meant.

Don't know if there is precedent, but certainly people would be unhappy. On the other hand, if you made it a neighborhood school, the neighbors might trade a toddler aged park for an elementary school.

Why are budgets low? Property values have rebounded past bubble?

Commercially office vacancy rates are high, which lowers commercial proeprty tax receipts. This has been a big problem for Arlington since the BRAC process and other considerations started moving Federal offices out of Arlington 10 or so years ago.

A toddler and elementary playground, a sprayground, heavily-used basketball and tennis courts (I've taken tennis lessons there myself), and a picnic shelter where we personally have been to at least four birthday parties over the years (and we don't even live near there). A lot of people would be rightfully ticked off if they razed all of that to add some extra trailers to ASFS instead of doing the swap.

But do go on thinking only about yourself. It's a good look for you.

I've heard rumors there is a covenant on the Hayes property that Hayes park is always supposed to be used as a park. Same as I've heard there is an easement on 15th and Monroe St. that those roads cannot be reopened. But I've never actually seen any of the documents, and not an attorney or bureaucrat, so don't know where to begin looking.

If you want the boomers to turn out in droves at all foreseeable school board meetings and then vote down every future school bond measure, by all means suggest taking away one inch of green space from their precious parks. It'll be worse than having to listen to the old people tell us why Robert E. Lee was such a great person and we should continue to honor him by keeping W-L's name.

Suggesting schools take a public park is a complete non-starter for anyone who's lived in Arlington more than 10 minutes.
