White privilege is alive and well and the white DCC mommies on this thread are busy protecting it! They could care less about Latino or AA students and are constantly, desperately seeking more URM whites to "save" their neighborhood schools, want to bus the poor kids out of their schools , and push for schools within schools so their kids don't mix with the other lower performing population. Biggest bunch os hypocrites on the planet.

The whole thing is a big cluster. No one is happy except the DCC white mommies who think they benefited somehow. Actual URM students were not helped in any way. MCPS is yet again in legal hot water this time for racial selection thinly disguised as geographic discrimination. Principals and teachers got screwed when the central office tried to dig themselves out at the last minute by creating faux enriched classes that didn't exist.

You missed the point which was to identify the most qualified students for these programs. Almost 10X as many students competed for the limited slots this year than in previous. Changes to the test and selection were made such that prepping had less of an impact.

I don’t know what people are complaining about...now their middle schools get advanced programs right in the school and their kids don’t have to travel anywhere. So once again the wealthy schools have the better end of the stick.

And you know that isn't remotely true, the peer cohort excluded higher performing students in favor if lower performing students in attempt to rebalance the demographic numbers but after minority kids from further out locations didn't accept spots, it ended up being DCC white kids. Yuck.

This could have been solved much more equitably with a simpler approach. MCPS should have taken the 25 set aside seats for TPES and marked those as only available to FARMS students from anywhere in county. MCPS should have announced plans to open another real magnet in up county or the west with another 25 seats set aside for FARMS only kids. All other spots go the highest scoring kids - merit based no profiling. There is a lot of poverty in Germantown and some sections of Gaithersburg, its unreasonable to expect these kids to take 1.5 hour or longer bus ride across the county two times a day.

This solution would achieve the goal of including more URM students and benefit everyone except the UMC white kids that take the easier TPMS spots, which should be fine. There is no valid argument for why white rich kids in TP need some type of special access at the expense of everyone else.

Didn't realize there was that much interest in the TPES STEM magnet. It's nice that my first grader had STEM and all but probably not worth the bus ride.

When you give people what they ask for they still complain.

Apparently, this pushed a few tiger moms over the edge when their anointed ones didn't make the cut. Rather than face facts, they're insisting there's this secret conspiracy to keep cheat their more deserving offspring without a shred of supporting evidence.

Interesting how the DCC moms are trying to deflect from the issue that the spots intended to serve diversity ended up serving rich white DCC kids who didn't score as high as others. Don't you feel bad that the white DCC kid is somewhere that they don't deserve to be and that URM kids were not helped in the end? Guess not.

Do you have any proof of these claims? This seems more like a paranoid delusion.

pretty much

I really hope its just one poster that constantly refers to asian american mothers with the racially derogatory term tiger mom. I've heard MCPS staff use this term too and its repulsive. We should embrace intelligence and hard work not attack it because the individual has the wrong skin color.

I think it's more the insane assumption that somehow their child is more deserving than others and their insistence that their offspring was cheated by an undeserving "URM" without providing a shred of proof.

That doesn't explain why neighborhoods would be segregated by race/ethnicity. And it also doesn't explain the lack of diversity of housing types in a given area.

Policies like red-lining or locating the vast majority of section 8 housing to remote corners of the county helped contribute to this situation.

illegal immigration and MoCo sanctuary city reputation greatly helped as well.

MCPS really needs to be more transparent about test scores so that parents from all parts of the county can trust the process again.
I think what many people were shocked by was the unusually low acceptance numbers from certain CES schools I seem to remember someone saying the Cold Spring went from 25 acceptances last year to just 2 this year.

This is from the MCCPTA letter from February

"Over the last few days, it has come to our attention that, a number of students in the 99th percentile in all of the CogAT categories (Verbal, Quantitative, Nonverbal, and Composite) are being denied entrance - and are not even eligible for the wait pool -- because MCPS believes that the presence of large numbers of academic peers in their local schools will result in their needs being met at those schools. In addition, early indicators suggest that large numbers of very high performing students currently attending one of in the Centers for Enriched Studies (particularly in Barnsley CES, Chevy Chase CES, and Cold Spring CES as we learned for now) are not being offered placement in the magnets, even though those students have completed an elementary curriculum that places them well above the MCPS curriculum offered in local middle schools."
