are AP exams really necessary?

Did you just ask why people lie on DCUM? You must be new here.

That would make sense if it was to prevent one from getting credit for the class AND taking the class at Middlebury for credit. Otherwise it’s pretty weird. Besides, can’t you just not send them your AP scores?

Maybe because you would ruin the curve?

All smart and knowledgeable kids threaten the curve. Has to be a double-credit protection as someone suggested above.

No just surprised at the lack of reading comp.

High grades at the private school where I teach, and at other private schools where I've worked, mean little. I would not have a job if I were not ridiculously "generous" with the As and Bs my students and their parents expect. My colleagues concur: we vent about this a lot.

I've taught my AP class for about 10 years, and the AP exam scores DO, in my subject at least, reflect actual ability/level of mastery.

I think AP exams are a way to measure rigor, when standards for grades are so inconsistently applied. Do your students and their parents get upset if they have an A in the class and then get a 3 or lower on the exam?

True but it is one thing to argue "x school is better" based on reflexive loyalty. Who is championing APs so that they would make things up (not that anyone did so, PP was just demanding proof that s/he should have been able to find).
