DP. How does the opioid epidemic figure in to those statistics? I assume ODs are counted separately? |
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3935688/ they also have more cancer, strokes, accidental deaths, (i forget the 2 other) |
A lot of people think they're experts on crime statistics in West Baltimore because they watched The Wire. |
Really? Baltimore and DC have some of the best public transportation. That is a pretty pathetic excuse for why you can't work. |
Can you find me any rural area in America that have 35 wounded from gun shots like Chicago had in 2 days this past weekend? |
It might be some of the best public transportation in the US, but it still doesn't easily or conveniently get poor people from where they live to where the jobs are, and especially not outside of regular commuting hours. |
Can you find me any other urban area in America with similar numbers? Or a rural area with 2.7 million people? |
They don't want to be on birth control!! Most of these girls get pregnant on purpose. I worked as an RN in ob/gyn clinics in Baltimore for year (at Johns Hopkins Bayview, Harbor Hospital and Mercy Medical Center). I love working with this population but no, they're not getting pregnant because of a failure or lack of birth control. The vast majority of it is purposeful---the problem is MUCH bigger than a birth control access one (i.e. how can we change their entire world view so that they have bigger goals than having a baby at 15?) |

previous poster again--
My post should have read "I worked as an RN at ob/gyn clinics in Baltimore for YEARS (not a year).

Completely true. Anyone who works with this population of young women will tell you the same thing. Agree that it would be immensely helpful to address the issue of helping young girls want more than just another baby. |
As far as illegal drug addiction of all types, Baltimore city's population has fallen under 700,000 and it has an estimated 70,000 drug addicts among its residents. 1 in 10 city residents are addicted. Astounding but sadly true. Worse still, the problem tends to concentrate in certain city neighborhoods. |
taught HS for many years in very challenging schools Girls have babies b/c they 1) think they're cute (until they realize the responsibility) and 2) want a purpose in life. very sad all around agree - BC is available! |
Baltimore's public transportation is nothing like DC's and it's horrible. If you happen to live and work on the lightrail, you might be ok, but otherwise you're looking at spending hours traversing by bus. Buses that don't appear to follow a schedule, and put your safety at risk in some cases. |
