College and University Discussion
| Any thoughts about Mount Union? |
| I didn't realize people were still stupid enough to do lovettwas arts |
Huh? |
| Otterbein College in Columbus |
A great school that few people outside of Ohio have heard of... |
| Is the opiate crisis in Ohio manifesting itself in the liberal arts colleges? |
| I hear that all USC students joined the MS-13 gang. |
Really great for theater. It has graduated a lot of actors who work in Hollywood and on Broadway. |
No. Why would you say such a dumb thing? |
Well-played. |
Actually I am parent of Denison freshman and I think it's a reasonable guestion/concern. As street dealers look for new customers you would be naive to think that they don't view the "rich" kids at these schools as potential, for a lack of a better word, prey. We have had very positive experiences with Denison but this was in the back of my mind while we were making our decision. As a parent how could it not. I know Denison is working to help rebuild Newark, a nearby town, that they sometimes suggest as a place for parents to stay if the Inns in Granville are sold out. As an aside The Granville Inn is a beautiful old Inn and highly recommended. To my eye Newark has evidence of a tough place with likely opiate addicts. I'm originally an inner city kid so I'd like to think I still have a bit of an antennae and it was definitely picking up a vibe. I grabbed a Granville cop at one of the events and politely asked him if there was any basis to my vibe. He was direct and told me my son, nor any Denison student, didnt belong in Newark. He told me if my son wanted to get off campus that he should take the free shuttle Denison provides to a nearby mall - I believe it's called the Easton mall. We went checked it out and it's beautiful - it's more like a small village than a mall and reminded me of something Disney would build. Very very nice and my son takes advantage of it to attend the movies. We have been to Columbus a couple of times and have had good experiences. I mention my experiences because I think Denison is doing a great job - we are very pleased and would eagerly have another offspring attend but we and our children should have a situational awareness. If I sent my child to Yale I would tell them to keep their wits about them in New Haven. If they went to UPenn I would say the same for parts of Philly. They are impressionable young adults away from home for the first time. Hope this helps. |
Interesting. Thanks for your insights. |
I'm also a Denison parent and while we know this is an issue in Ohio, it is also an issue elsewhere - SLACs in Maine are surrounded by towns not vastly different from Newark, Ohio. My DC is thriving at Denison and I have no concerns about whether the opiod crisis has any impact on him. The proximity of Columbus (and Easton as well) is a great thing for Denison students. DC and her friends go into Columbus a couple of times a month to see a museum exhibit, attend a show, or have a meal out. Denison makes car rentals available for $5/hour for its students. I am very pleased with the school in pretty much every way. |
I'm the PP and my intent was to address the comment about the question being a dumb thing to say as I don't think it is. I feel quite fortunate that my DS is able to attend Denison and my wife and I couldn't be happier (well she might be if it was a little closer . I concur about Columbus - it's a nice perk. I wish you DD the best of luck.

Oh, I agree - not a dumb thing to say at all. We are huge fans of Denison and feel very fortunate to have DC there. Best of luck to your DC as well! |
